CK Tan is founder and President of GAT System Sdn Bhd. CK has great passion for IT games and programmes even when he was a kid. He can spend hours immersed in electronic games and figuring out the strategies to make programming easier and simpler for his friends to understand him and the games. That included getting his parents to support his inventiveness in system programming - and why he spends hours playing video games. After he obtained his first Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology from the University of London, he continued to pursue his Master’s Degree of IT from the University of Malaya in Malaysia while he was working as a software engineer in one of the software companies. A few years later, there was a job offer from Nestle Malaysia where he managed to obtain a software project contract to work there. In the beginning, Nestle Malaysia offered CK a contractual software programmer post, which was supposed to expire when the work was done. One day, the Sales Director gave CK a special project to handle. It was more like a test to see if CK could handle the job efficiently. When CK successfully designed and developed the system, the sales director was very impressed with CK’s talent and skills. CK had developed the Distributor Channel sales and Inventory, Retailer key account Business intelligent platform which had improved the visibility of the distributor, Retailer sales opportunity, distributor inventory and sales return management. With this platform, Nestle had improved substantially in the sales and profit. As a result, CK was offered with a full time employment to stay as a programmer in Nestle Malaysia. During that five years stint with Nestle, CK had encountered a lot of challenges. For example, CK had faced the difficulty in huge and complexity of distributor data management, BI technology and limitation of hardware issues to support the business requirement. From time to time, with his persistency, CK was able to overcome the obstacles and acquired a lot of FMCG business knowledge and processes. Through the tough learning experiences, CK had further improved his knowledge and skills in business Intelligence in FMCG and supply chain area. He developed a few main systems for Nestle which include: Vendor Management Inventory (VMI), Demand & Supply Planning Management, Trade and Promotion Spend Management, Distributor Sales and Inventory Business Intelligence Systems, Retailer Scan sales BI systems and etc. Until today, the systems are still remained as the key online analytic systems for the operation of Nestle. Due to CK’s contribution and talent, one of the Sales Director of Nestle had named CK as the “Wizard”. After Nestle, CK moved to Tesco Malaysia as Commercial IT Manager. In Tesco, CK had further gained more exposure learning about the trades between retailers, the products they manufactured, the sales and the movement of the products in the market according to their popularity. It also gave CK a macroscopic look into FMCG’s business processes and the system requirements, along with the data analysis to enhance product development based on market needs. With the extensive exposure and experiences, CK had assisted Tesco in developing the main Commercial Sales and Margin Business Intelligence (SQL) platforms. One of the systems, which is named as Commercial Business Intelligence (CBS) had improved Tesco’s sales in few millions yearly. Overall, with CK’s contribution, Tesco’s sales, profit achievement and operations has grown to the next higher level. With over fifteen years’ experience in the FMCG industry and IT knowledge, CK set up his own Company in 2003 to cater to the needs of the industry for Business Intelligence to offer online analytical System-Based Point-of-Sales data compilation and analysis.
