Company Reviews

Johnson Matthey (JM) is a world leader in platinum group metals (PGMs). For over 200 years, we have used advanced metals chemistry to tackle the planet’s biggest challenges.

Many leading energy, chemicals and automotive companies depend on our technology and expertise to decarbonise, reduce harmful emissions and improve their sustainability.

Our purpose, ‘Metals that matter, for a healthier world’, is rooted in our foundation, and alludes to the positive impact our solutions bring to people, communities and the environment.

PGMs are the metals that matter. From improving air quality and enabling clean energy and transport, to advancing cancer diagnostics, our products and services are helping to create a healthier and more resilient world.

And as the largest recycler of PGMs, we're embedding circularity at scale to help maintain a sustainable supply of these critical materials for the future.

Work-life balance is okay for R&D roles
Pros: The company offers good vacation time, which helps a lot when you need a break. For many onsite roles, there's some flexibility with start and end times if you talk to your manager. This is nice for those with family commitments.
Cons: Sometimes project deadlines in catalyst development can mean working longer hours, especially as a Process Engineer. It's not a 40-hour-week guarantee, and you might feel pressure. The hybrid model is okay but some teams are very strict about specific days in the Royston office.
Advice to Management: Try to make expectations clearer regarding workload and project hours for Process Engineers. More consistent application of the hybrid work policy across all teams would also help improve the work-life balance for those in the chemical manufacturing industry.

Hybrid Model is Okay, But Needs Tweaks
Pros: As a Process Engineer, the hybrid work model is a huge plus. We often get 2-3 WFH days a week. It really helps with my work-life balance and cuts down on the commute to the Royston, UK office.
Cons: Flexibility can be tough for hands-on chemical manufacturing projects. It's hard to get much done remotely if you constantly need lab access. Sometimes, managers aren't consistent with offering the same flexibility across all teams.

Leadership has its ups and downs
Pros: For Process Engineer roles, you get good exposure to different projects in the chemical industry. The onsite team in Royston, UK is usually pretty solid and you'll find smart, dedicated colleagues. The pay and benefits are decent for a corporate company of this size.
Cons: Leadership often feels disconnected from daily operations. They don't always empower teams or provide clear direction, which slows things down. Sometimes decisions feel top-down without much input from those on the ground.
Advice to Management: Try to be more present and involved with the teams. Empower your managers to make more decisions at their level. Listen to the feedback from the engineers and scientists on the shop floor.
