West Island School is seeking an Educational Assistant (EAP) on a full-time basis to start from August 2026. This is a full-time permanent position active for 10.5 months only, summer break will be unpaid leave.

Multilingual students form approximately 63% of WIS student population from years 7-13. The EAP Faculty needs to provide both in-class curricular support and administrative support to subjects across the curriculum as well as discrete groups of students. The Educational Assistant attached to this faculty is required to provide this support on an ongoing basis.

Main Responsibilities

  • To support students requiring various levels of academic language support on the EAP register. Students must be supported in the development of key academic language skills in discrete groups.
  • To support the reading skills of Pre-16 students to provide guidance according to the school’s inclusion policies. To respond to requests for in-class support from subject teachers.
  • To support IGCSE/ GCSE students in their coursework and homework. To provide follow up and context as required for EAP Intensive or EAP Lite lessons.
  • To occasionally support lunchtime help clubs prior to exams /tests at certain times of the year.
  • To follow up students in language intensive subject areas – mainstream subject classrooms.
  • To maintain records of In-class Support on prescribed shared proformas provided by the faculty.
  • To attend all collaboration sessions and faculty meetings to provide formal feedback from subject classrooms and inform EAP teachers of student need and progress. To store / document curricular materials as relevant to EAP.
  • To provide differentiated assistance as required by EAP and subject teachers. (for example) - the creation or search for differentiated support resources, as relevant.
  • To provide administrative support for filing, record keeping, transfer of data, testing, stock taking and display as required.

Performs other duties and assumes accountabilities as apparent or as delegated, including mutually agreed-upon objectives.

REPORTING TO: Head of EAP Faculty & Vice Principal in charge of EAP & Inclusion

Requirements & Experience

  • At least graduate qualifications from a reputed University.
  • Preferred but not essential, post-graduate qualifications related to education or prior teaching/support experience at a secondary school.
  • Experience in international schools and a multi-lingual, multi-ethnic, multicultural classroom is desired.
  • Familiarity with the language & curricular demands of secondary schools, preferably IB MYP / DP schools.

Abilities & Knowledge

  • Strong English speaking skills and ability to clarify language for students (Familiarity with literature in English is an advantage)
  • Ability to work in different subject areas and pick up the required competencies to support students
  • Sound knowledge of the use of basic ICT skills – Microsoft Office, Google Suite (Docs, Classroom, sheets, slides) and Familiarity with Windows.
  • Willingness to collaborate with subject teachers and Heads of Year as relevant.
  • Familiarity with Zoom and Zoom protocols for education should online learning be required.
  • Working knowledge of English Grammar, academic vocabulary, and reading & writing for specific purposes.
  • An understanding of students’ academic language needs as noted in the EAP & IN registers on the school database.
  • An understanding of the role and responsibilities of an Educational Assistant in the classroom including Child Protection practices in the school ( this information will be provided)
  • Willingness to create support resources and supplementary work for students where necessary to assist the class teacher or EAP teacher.

  • A flexible approach with difficult students and the ability to foster positive relationships and trust with students being supported.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Willingness to be involved in EAP lunchtime activities with students as required.
  • Strong ethical integrity in all aspects of the job.
  • Willingness to participate in professional development on designated CPD days: internal (at WIS) and external (ESF).
