Environmental Engineering – AI Data Trainer

About The Role

We're partnering with the world's leading AI research labs to build smarter, more technically rigorous AI models — and we need environmental engineers to make it happen.

As an Environmental Engineering AI Data Trainer, you'll use your domain expertise to challenge, audit, and improve advanced AI systems on topics like water and wastewater treatment, air quality management, hazardous waste remediation, and environmental compliance. Your work will directly shape how AI reasons through complex real-world engineering problems.

This is a unique opportunity to sit at the intersection of environmental science and cutting-edge technology — without leaving your home office.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Design Advanced Problems — Develop complex, domain-specific engineering challenges covering contaminant transport, mass balance in treatment plants, hydrology, pollutant dispersion, and Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)
  • Author Gold-Standard Solutions — Write rigorous, step-by-step technical solutions — from chemical dosage calculations to hydraulic flow models — that serve as benchmark "golden responses" for AI training
  • Audit AI Outputs — Evaluate AI-generated remediation plans, environmental impact statements, and mathematical proofs for technical accuracy, regulatory compliance, and safety
  • Refine AI Reasoning — Identify logical errors such as incorrect stoichiometry in biological processes or failure to account for secondary environmental impacts, and provide structured feedback to improve model performance

Who You Are

  • Advanced Degree — Masters (pursuing or completed) or PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering with an environmental focus, or a closely related discipline
  • Deep Domain Knowledge — Strong foundation in areas such as aquatic chemistry, wastewater process design, air quality engineering, or hazardous waste remediation
  • Strong Technical Writer — Able to communicate complex ecological and engineering concepts clearly, precisely, and concisely in written form
  • Detail-Oriented — High precision when working with unit conversions (e.g., mg/L to ppm), chemical equations, and regulatory compliance frameworks (e.g., EPA, ISO 14001)
  • No AI experience required — if you know your engineering, we'll handle the rest

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience with data annotation, data quality review, or evaluation workflows
  • Familiarity with environmental modeling software
  • Experience writing technical reports, EIS documents, or regulatory submissions

Why Join Us

  • Work on cutting-edge AI projects with top-tier research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible — work on your own schedule, 10–40 hours per week
  • Freelance autonomy: you choose when and how much you work
  • Make a meaningful impact by improving how AI handles real environmental engineering challenges
  • Collaborate with a global network of subject matter experts
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension
