Good culture, but it's changing quickly.

Syntax has a solid foundation for its company culture, especially in the Austin office, but recent shifts in remote work and leadership communication are starting to make it feel less like a close-knit big tech environment. It's not bad, just different than it used to be.

Pros

As a Software Engineer, I've really enjoyed the initial culture here. People were supportive and it felt like a close-knit startup even though it's a growing big tech company. There's a decent sense of community in the Austin office.

Cons

Lately, the company culture feels less personal. The remote policy changes impact team cohesion, making it harder for hybrid teams to connect. Sometimes there's a lack of clear communication from leadership about big shifts.

Advice to Management

Focus on transparent communication, especially for hybrid and remote teams. Try to preserve the supportive culture that drew many of us in.

Decent Pay, Benefits are Pretty Standard Here
Pros: The compensation for a Cloud Solutions Architect is solid, especially for the Montreal market. The base salary felt pretty competitive compared to other IT services companies. Benefits are decent too, with good health coverage and a fair 401k match from this mid-sized company.
Cons: Raises are often pretty modest, so don't expect huge annual bumps. The bonus structure isn't always clear, which can be frustrating. Wish they'd improve the PTO policy a bit, it feels a little behind.
Advice to Management: Focus on making the annual review and raise process more transparent. Also, look into improving the PTO policy to match other tech firms.

Hybrid model has some serious kinks
Pros: The team in the San Francisco office is great, really supportive. You get solid benefits, like good health insurance. The actual software development work itself is usually interesting.
Cons: Work flexibility here is a big challenge. They started pushing for 4 days a week in the office, which isn't great for a modern tech company. It makes scheduling personal appointments really hard for remote workers, or anyone with a commute.
Advice to Management: Re-evaluate the strict onsite requirements for engineering roles. Trust your employees more with WFH options. A truly flexible hybrid model would boost morale.

Good Remote Work, Tough Sprints for Devs
Pros: The remote work flexibility as a Software Engineer is really good. I've been able to maintain a decent WFH setup, which is super helpful for my daily routine. It's great not having a commute.
Cons: Work-life balance can get tough during active agile sprints. There's often pressure to push hard, which isn't great for all dev roles. It can feel like a startup environment at times.
Advice to Management: Try to better manage expectations around sprint intensity. Respecting personal time, even with remote work, is key for employee retention.
