Leadership can be a real mixed bag
Working at ByteDance as a Software Engineer was intense. The technical challenges were great for growth, but leadership, especially mid-level, really needs some work.
You'll learn tons, especially with algorithm development. My colleagues were super smart and made the daily grind better. For big tech Software Engineer roles, the pay and benefits package is definitely solid.
Leadership, especially middle management, often struggles with giving clear direction. It's very top-down. There's not much room for junior engineers to push back on crazy deadlines. This leads to a pretty tough work-life balance in the Mountain View office.
Focus on training middle managers better. They need to empower their teams more. Give engineers more say in project scoping.
