Leadership Can Be A Real Mixed Bag Here
As a Software Engineer at ByteDance in the Mountain View office, I've seen a pretty wide spectrum of leadership quality. Some managers are great, but the top-down directives for our content platform often feel disconnected, which impacts projects a lot.
You get to work with super smart folks, especially other Software Engineers. There are lots of chances to work on interesting problems for a global tech company, which is good for your resume and skill building.
Leadership can be pretty demanding, especially regarding timelines for new features on the social media apps. Project direction changes a lot from the top, which means re-doing work. It's tough on morale for the engineering teams.
Try to stabilize project direction and empower engineering managers more. The constant shifts are burning people out. Better communication from senior leadership on strategic shifts would also help.
