Hybrid Model is Just Okay for Engineers

My time as a Software Engineer at ByteDance has been a mixed bag, especially concerning work flexibility. While the company is a big tech player in the social media industry, the expected hybrid model doesn't always feel very flexible for those in engineering roles. The work is challenging, but finding a true work-life balance with the current setup can be tough.

Pros

You get some basic flexibility. Adjusting your start time by an hour or so is usually fine if you communicate it. This is pretty standard for a global company like ByteDance, and it helps with occasional personal stuff. There are also designated WFH days, which is nice for a change of scenery.

Cons

Work flexibility is pretty limited as a Software Engineer. We have a strict hybrid model, usually 3 days onsite in the Mountain View office, which feels less flexible than advertised. Don't expect much freedom for ad-hoc remote work. The 'flexibility' often just means being available outside of core hours, not actually choosing *when* or *where* to work more freely. It's tough on personal life sometimes.

Advice to Management

Seriously rethink the current hybrid model. More genuine flexibility, especially for experienced tech roles, would greatly improve employee morale and retention. Trust your teams more with their schedules.

Dynamic Tech Environment with Real Growth Potential
Pros: I've truly enjoyed being a Software Engineer here in Singapore. It's a highly dynamic tech company with massive learning opportunities, especially working on global internet products. The environment is collaborative, full of brilliant and supportive colleagues, which really helps with professional development.
Cons: The pace is intense; expect occasional busy periods. Career progression can feel a bit slow for a Software Engineer, despite the rapid growth. Also, securing approvals for new initiatives sometimes takes longer than ideal.
Advice to Management: Focus on streamlining internal approval processes and clearly communicating career progression paths to help Software Engineers grow alongside the company's rapid expansion.
