Decent place for engineers, leadership needs work

This place has a pretty solid engineering culture, but leadership is a mixed bag. Some managers are great, others not so much, which can make things tough for individual contributors.


Pros

The compensation package is pretty competitive for big tech in Seattle, especially for senior software engineers. I've found a lot of smart, collaborative folks on the project teams, and the engineering challenges are often really interesting for backend development.


Cons

Leadership can be inconsistent. There's often a lack of clear strategic direction from upper management, which leads to frequent reorgs and shifting priorities. It's tough when you're working remote and don't always feel connected to decisions being made at HQ.


Advice to Management

Focus on clearer communication from the top down. Invest in leadership training for middle managers to ensure consistency. Also, remember remote employees in your planning.

Pay is okay, but benefits could be better
Pros: The base salary as a Software Engineer is pretty competitive, especially for early career levels. They offer a solid 401k match that vests quickly, which is a nice perk. Plus, the WFH stipends for our hybrid setup help out a bit.
Cons: Stock compensation isn't very competitive compared to other big tech firms in the industry. The healthcare plans are just decent, and you'd expect more comprehensive options for a company this size. Also, the bonus structure isn't very clear and often feels pretty small.
Advice to Management: Re-evaluate the total compensation package for software development employees, focusing on making stock options and healthcare benefits more competitive with other major tech companies in the Seattle area.

Decent Balance for Software Engineers at Techdome
Pros: The work-life balance here as a Software Engineer is actually pretty solid most of the time. I appreciate the hybrid model; it's easy to split time between home and the Seattle office. Management generally respects after-hours, so I'm not always on call.
Cons: Project deadlines can be tough, and then it's all hands on deck for a few weeks. Sometimes, the workload for individual developers feels really uneven across teams. There's definitely pressure during product launches in this big tech environment.
