With a long-standing history of innovation and a commitment to delivering accurate and reliable geographic information, Ordnance Survey plays a vital role in supporting national infrastructure and empowering decision-making processes. The organization is dedicated to harnessing cutting-edge technology to solve complex real-world problems, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and maintaining its position as a leader in geospatial intelligence.

About The Role

As a Senior Backend Developer at Ordnance Survey, you will take a pivotal role in shaping the future of our geospatial data platforms and services. Your expertise will be instrumental in designing, developing, and deploying scalable, high-performance backend systems that handle large-scale geospatial datasets and analytical platforms. You will lead technical initiatives, making critical decisions that influence system architecture and ensuring the delivery of robust, secure, and efficient solutions. Working within a dynamic and innovative environment, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including architects, project managers, and stakeholders, to develop cloud-native applications leveraging Microsoft Azure technologies. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on national-level data services, impacting how geographic information is accessed and utilized across various sectors.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess proven experience as a senior backend developer with strong proficiency in C# and .NET frameworks or equivalent languages. You should have extensive hands-on experience building cloud-native applications and services within Microsoft Azure, including familiarity with Azure services such as Container Apps, Storage, Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and identity/access management. A solid understanding of relational and analytical data platforms, especially OLAP systems and large-scale data processing, is essential. Knowledge of geospatial data concepts, formats, and processing techniques—such as spatial databases, GIS tools, or spatial indexing—is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a good grasp of software architecture, design patterns, and modern engineering practices, along with experience working in agile environments. Strong communication skills, a passion for continuous learning, and a commitment to delivering high-quality solutions are also key qualifications.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include leading the technical delivery of complex backend systems, collaborating closely with architects, delivery managers, and stakeholders to ensure project alignment and success. You will design and implement scalable, secure, and highly available services using C# and Azure cloud technologies, optimizing data pipelines and services that leverage OLAP and analytical data platforms. Managing geospatial datasets and ensuring efficient storage, processing, and access to geographic information will be a core aspect of your role. Mentoring and coaching engineers to enhance team capabilities, sharing best practices, and identifying training opportunities will be vital to fostering a high-performing engineering team. You will operate and improve production systems to maintain robustness, resilience, and reliability, proactively addressing technical challenges and implementing improvements. Clear communication of goals, progress, and technical issues across teams is essential, along with providing line management support for engineers and associate engineers as needed.
