The Role
The
Lead Buyer is responsible for
overseeing procurement activities for assigned vessel pods while providing leadership and support to a team of Buyers and Senior Buyers. This role ensures the timely, cost-effective, and compliant sourcing of technical stores, spare parts, and services required for vessel operations.
The Lead Buyer
serves as a key point of coordination between vessels, suppliers, technical teams, and internal stakeholders to maintain operational efficiency and procurement excellence.
Your Responsibilities
- Manage the overall procurement requirements of assigned vessel pods, including technical stores, spare parts, and services.
- Review and oversee purchase requisitions, quotations, supplier selection, and cost comparisons to ensure compliance with company policies and operational requirements.
- Coordinate with vessels, suppliers, freight forwarders, vessel agents, and technical teams to ensure timely delivery of goods and services.
- Monitor procurement activities and follow up on critical orders to support vessel operational requirements.
- Ensure accurate documentation and maintenance of procurement records, committed costs, and requisition housekeeping activities.
- Follow up on advance payments and coordinate with stakeholders for the timely dispatch of goods and services.
- Prepare and review reports related to procurement activities, overdue invoices, and supplier performance.
- Act as an escalation point for procurement and supply chain issues that may impact vessel operations.
- Maintain and update preferred vendor lists and support supplier relationship management initiatives.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance procurement efficiency, service quality, and operational performance.
- Supervise and support Buyers and Senior Buyers in their daily procurement activities.
- Train, coach, and mentor team members on procurement processes, systems, and best practices.
- Monitor team performance, attendance, and workload distribution to ensure business requirements are met.
- Conduct regular meetings with procurement and technical teams to strengthen collaboration and communication.
- Support performance evaluations and identify development opportunities for team members.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned by management.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in any Business-related course or a relevant field.
- Minimum of 1–3 years of experience in the ship management industry as a Buyer or Senior Buyer.
- Strong understanding of maritime procurement processes, vessel purchasing, and supply chain operations.
- Experience using Oracle or similar procurement and ERP systems is preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Fluent in written and spoken English.
- Team player with a positive attitude and strong collaboration skills.
- Willingness to learn new systems, processes, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
