An Inventory Head in the construction industry is responsible for planning, controlling, and managing materials, tools, equipment, and warehouse operations to ensure projects have the right resources at the right time while minimizing waste and costs.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inventory Planning and Control
  • Develop and implement inventory management policies and procedures.
  • Determine optimal stock levels for construction materials, spare parts, and consumables.
  • Monitor inventory turnover and prevent overstocking or stock shortages.
  • Forecast material requirements based on project schedules and procurement plans.
  • Warehouse Management
  • Supervise warehouse operations, including receiving, storage, and issuance of materials.
  • Ensure proper storage conditions to prevent damage, deterioration, or loss.
  • Organize warehouse layouts for efficient material handling and retrieval.
  • Maintain cleanliness, safety, and compliance with company standards.
  • Material Receiving and Issuance
  • Verify incoming materials against purchase orders and delivery documents.
  • Coordinate inspections to ensure materials meet quality specifications.
  • Control the issuance of materials to project sites and departments.
  • Monitor and document material transfers between locations.
  • Inventory Monitoring and Reporting
  • Maintain accurate inventory records using ERP or inventory management systems.
  • Conduct regular stock counts, cycle counts, and physical inventory audits.
  • Investigate and reconcile inventory discrepancies.
  • Prepare inventory status reports, stock valuation reports, and consumption analyses.
  • Coordination with Procurement and Projects
  • Work closely with procurement teams to ensure timely replenishment of materials.
  • Coordinate with project managers and site engineers regarding material requirements.
  • Provide inventory data to support purchasing decisions and project planning.
  • Monitor lead times and critical material availability.
  • Cost Control and Loss Prevention
  • Monitor material usage and identify opportunities for cost savings.
  • Implement controls to reduce waste, theft, pilferage, and obsolescence.
  • Track slow-moving, excess, and obsolete inventory.
  • Ensure proper documentation and authorization for inventory transactions.
  • Team Leadership
  • Supervise inventory staff, warehouse personnel, and storekeepers.
  • Assign tasks, monitor performance, and provide training.
  • Establish performance standards and inventory accuracy targets.
  • Promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
