Job Title: Senior Engineer (Database Administrator)

Job Summary

Catalyst Brands is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Engineer (Database Administrator) to oversee, maintain, and optimize our critical enterprise database infrastructure. As a retail company with high-volume transactional data, our operations rely heavily on data availability, security, and performance. The ideal candidate will possess advanced technical expertise in managing multi-platform database environments, specifically Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL. This role is responsible for database architecture, performance tuning, high availability setup, disaster recovery planning, and complex data migrations.

Responsibilities

  • Database Architecture, Implementation & Administration (30%)
  • Design, install, configure, and maintain high-performance enterprise database systems across Oracle, SQL Server, and PostgreSQL platforms.
  • Manage database storage, tablespaces, provisioning, and capacity planning to accommodate rapid retail data growth (inventory, sales, customer data).
  • Implement and manage high-availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions, including Oracle RAC/Data Guard, SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, and PostgreSQL replication.
  • Performance Optimization & Tuning (25%)
  • Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and database indexing.
  • Analyze execution plans and utilize native tools (e.g., Oracle AWR/ADDM, SQL Server Profiler, PostgreSQL EXPLAIN ANALYZE) to ensure sub-second query response times for retail applications.
  • Optimize database parameters, memory allocation, and I/O configurations at the operating system level.
  • Security, Compliance & Data Integrity (20%)
  • Establish and enforce robust database security policies, user access controls, and data encryption (at rest and in transit) to ensure compliance with PCI-DSS and other retail data regulations.
  • Develop, test, and implement comprehensive backup and recovery strategies to guarantee zero data loss for critical business transactions.
  • Conduct regular security audits, vulnerability assessments, and patch management across all database environments.
  • Automation, Migration & DevOps Integration (15%)
  • Write and maintain advanced scripts (Shell, PowerShell, Python, or PL/SQL) to automate routine administrative tasks, monitoring alerts, and data maintenance procedures.
  • Lead complex data migration projects, including cross-platform database migrations, cloud movements (AWS/Azure), and version upgrades.

oCollaborate with software engineering teams to support CI/CD pipelines, database schema deployments, and agile development cycles.

  • Mentorship & Strategic Planning (10%)
  • Provide tier-3 technical support for critical database escalations and participate in a rotational on-call schedule.
  • Evaluate emerging database technologies and trends to advise leadership on infrastructure modernization strategies.

oMentor junior engineers and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the database environment.

Qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a closely related quantitative field.
  • Experience: A minimum of 4 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in database administration and engineering.
  • Technical Proficiencies:
  • Proven expertise managing enterprise-grade Oracle (19c or higher), Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL databases.
  • Strong proficiency in writing and optimizing complex SQL and procedural languages (PL/SQL, T-SQL, PL/pgSQL).
  • Deep understanding of Linux/Unix and Windows operating systems.

Pay Range

USD $103,500.00 - USD $172,500.00 /Yr.
