Job Purpose
The Application Manager is responsible for the end-to-end health, stability, governance, and strategic development of the organization's application landscape. This role ensures that enterprise applications effectively support business operations across functions such as manufacturing, supply chain, finance, customer service, and commercial operations.
The Application Manager will oversee application lifecycle management, service performance, vendor governance, and continuous improvement initiatives. The role requires close collaboration with business stakeholders and technology teams to ensure applications remain reliable, secure, scalable, and aligned with business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Application Portfolio Management
- Manage the enterprise application portfolio and maintain application roadmaps covering current, future, and transitional states.
- Maintain accurate records of application ownership, criticality, lifecycle status, costs, risks, and dependencies.
- Lead application rationalization and standardization initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce complexity, and manage technical debt.
- Establish and govern standards for application configuration, environments, release management, and support models.
- Assess existing application environments and recommend improvements to enhance performance, resilience, and maintainability.
- Provide leadership and governance for core enterprise applications, ensuring alignment between business processes, system configuration, and data quality.
- Manage enhancement prioritization, backlog planning, and release scheduling in collaboration with business stakeholders.
- Ensure appropriate governance over master data, workflows, user roles, and integrations.
- Support manufacturing and operational systems to ensure reliable and efficient business operations.
- Coordinate application releases with operational teams to minimize disruption and ensure successful deployment.
- Promote consistency in application management practices while accommodating valid business requirements.
Integration and Digital Enablement
- Ensure reliability and performance of application integrations and interfaces.
- Establish standards for APIs, middleware, data interfaces, and file transfers.
- Ensure integrations are properly documented, secured, monitored, and tested.
- Collaborate with technology and business teams to support automation, analytics, and digital transformation initiatives.
- Ensure application and integration changes follow established software development lifecycle (SDLC) and change management processes.
- Contribute to application strategy and roadmap planning aligned with business objectives and technology standards.
- Support delivery of digital transformation and innovation initiatives within the application landscape.
Service Delivery and Operational Excellence
- Accountable for the availability, performance, and stability of business-critical applications.
- Manage application incident, problem, and change management processes.
- Lead major incident response activities, root cause analysis, and preventative improvement initiatives.
- Partner with infrastructure and cybersecurity teams to implement monitoring, alerting, and health-check capabilities.
- Drive continuous service improvement by identifying and resolving recurring issues.
Vendor Management and Governance
- Manage relationships with application vendors and service providers, including performance reviews, contract oversight, and escalation management.
- Oversee application budgets, licensing, renewals, and cost optimization initiatives.
- Ensure vendor performance meets agreed service expectations and governance requirements.
- Maintain application documentation, including functional specifications, technical designs, support procedures, and training materials.
- Coordinate user training and change adoption activities to support effective application usage.
- Ensure change communications are timely, accurate, and aligned with business readiness.
- Promote knowledge sharing, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across teams.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Build effective relationships with technology teams and business stakeholders.
- Partner with business leaders to understand operational needs and identify opportunities for application improvements.
- Support cross-functional initiatives involving finance, supply chain, manufacturing, customer service, and other business functions.
- Participate in project activities, workshops, and implementation initiatives across multiple business locations as required.
Skills and Experience
Enterprise Application Management
- Demonstrated experience managing business-critical enterprise applications within complex organizational environments.
- Strong understanding of enterprise application ecosystems, including ERP systems, manufacturing applications, integration platforms, and business support applications.
- Experience managing application lifecycles from implementation through optimization, enhancement, and retirement.
- Ability to assess application risks, resilience, and technical debt and develop practical improvement plans.
Service Management and Governance
- Experience managing application support functions, including incident, problem, and change management.
- Knowledge of service management principles, operational reporting, performance metrics, and continuous improvement practices.
- Ability to balance operational stability with ongoing business and technology enhancements.
- Experience working within governance, risk, compliance, and audit frameworks.
- Understanding of release management and change control processes.
Leadership and Stakeholder Management
- Ability to engage effectively with business and technology stakeholders at various levels.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts in business-focused language.
