CSC's Work-Life Balance: It's Hit or Miss

My time at CSC as an Associate Consultant in their Dallas office has been a mixed bag, especially regarding work-life balance. Some weeks are great, others are a grind. It really depends on the project and your project manager.

Pros

When you're on a good project, the 40-hour weeks are real. I enjoyed the hybrid model, giving me some WFH days. For IT consulting roles, there's a chance to learn a lot.

Cons

Be ready for crunch times on certain client projects; 60+ hours isn't uncommon. Sometimes, as an Associate Consultant, you just get slammed with work, impacting personal life.

Advice to Management

Try to standardize workload across client projects. Better resource allocation for IT services teams would help prevent burnout for people like Associate Consultants.

Leadership is a mixed bag here
Pros: Some of the direct team leads are pretty solid. They're good at guiding us as Software Engineers on specific IT projects. You can definitely learn from individual contributors who step up.
Cons: Upper management often feels out of touch with the day-to-day. Decisions trickle down slowly in this large corporate environment. There's not always clear direction from senior leadership for projects in the IT services industry.
Advice to Management: Senior leadership really needs to be more visible and provide clearer strategic direction. Empower middle management more so they can actually make an impact without constant delays. Listen to the folks on the ground.

WFH is okay, but watch out for project spikes
Pros: The WFH setup is really solid, especially being remote from Chicago. I saved a ton on commuting. For a corporate IT services company, they do offer decent flexibility outside of crunch times.
Cons: Work-life balance here is tough during peak client project deadlines. As a Software Engineer, I often put in long hours, making it hard to disconnect. It's not always a consistent 40-hour week.
Advice to Management: Try to better manage client expectations and resource allocation, especially for software development teams. More focus on consistent workloads would help with employee burnout.

CSC Culture: It's a Mixed Bag
Pros: I liked working with my immediate team. Everyone on the delivery teams in the Falls Church, VA office was supportive. It's a solid place to learn a lot about various IT services and digital transformation projects, especially if you're new to the industry. The benefits package was pretty decent too.
Cons: The company culture feels very old-school corporate. There's a lot of red tape to cut through for even simple things. Decision-making can be super slow, which is tough on projects. You sometimes feel like just a number in such a large enterprise, which isn't great for morale or career growth.
Advice to Management: Try to cut down on the bureaucracy. Empower teams more and speed up decision-making processes. Focus on making people feel like their contributions truly matter, not just a cog in the machine. A more agile approach to internal processes would really help.
