Job Title: Engineering Manager – Backend (Node.js)

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager – Backend who will lead and inspire a team of backend engineers to build scalable, reliable, and high-performance systems powering PW’s digital learning ecosystem. This role requires a strong technical foundation, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to guide teams in designing robust architectures, optimizing backend systems, and delivering impactful, user-centric solutions.
You will drive technical strategy, oversee execution across multiple projects, and ensure engineering excellence while collaborating closely with product, frontend, data, and DevOps teams.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & People Management
- Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of backend engineers (SDE-I, II, III).
- Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Drive engineering best practices, code quality standards, and technical excellence across the team.
- Conduct performance reviews, provide regular feedback, and support career development.
Technical Strategy & Architecture
- Define and drive the backend technical roadmap in alignment with business goals.
- Architect scalable, distributed, and highly available backend systems and microservices.
- Make strategic decisions regarding system design, tooling, and infrastructure.
- Evaluate and introduce emerging technologies to enhance platform performance and reliability.
Project & Delivery Management
- Oversee end-to-end execution of backend projects, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery.
- Collaborate with product managers to break down requirements and define clear engineering plans.
- Coordinate with frontend, DevOps, QA, and cross-functional teams to ensure seamless delivery.
- Manage risk, dependencies, and production stability across backend services.
Technical Execution
- Guide teams in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining backend services and APIs using Node.js, TypeScript, and NestJS.
- Oversee the implementation and optimization of CI/CD pipelines using Docker and Jenkins.
- Ensure reliable deployments and scaling using Kubernetes.
- Provide direction on database schema design and performance optimization (MongoDB, Redis).
- Oversee messaging infrastructure using Kafka.
- Drive performance monitoring and observability using Datadog and ELK stack.
Operational Excellence
- Lead incident management, troubleshooting, and resolution of production issues.
- Ensure strong monitoring, alerting, and system resilience practices.
- Maintain high standards for uptime, performance, and operational efficiency.
Candidate Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- 8–12 years of overall backend engineering experience, including 3+ years in a leadership or managerial role.
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript with deep expertise in Node.js and NestJS.
- Hands-on experience architecting and scaling microservices.
- Expertise with MongoDB, Redis, Kafka and experience designing high-throughput systems.
- Strong understanding of Docker, Jenkins, CI/CD, and Kubernetes.
- Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools such as Datadog and the ELK stack.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and team-building skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
