We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Librarian to lead our library services and support our educational vision at values at Island School. The postholder will play a vital role in developing and managing library resources, fostering a love of reading, and collaborating with educators to enhance student learning experiences.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities and Requirements
- Lead the strategic development and management of the library, ensuring it supports the educational goals of the school.
- Collaborate with teachers and curriculum leaders to integrate library resources into the curriculum.
- Promote a culture of reading and information literacy among students and staff.
- Provide guidance and support for students and teachers in research, academic writing, and information literacy skills.
Main Accountabilities
- Develop and manage the library collection, including procurement, cataloging, and classification of materials.
- Design and implement innovative programmes and events that enhance student engagement with literature and learning.
- Manage the library budget and oversee financial planning for resource acquisition.
- Collaborate with community librarians and external organisations to enhance library services.
- Maintain and manage electronic resources and digital subscriptions, ensuring accessibility for students and staff.
- Foster partnerships with teachers to support curriculum development and library-based lessons.
- Organise reading initiatives, competitions, and events that promote literacy and a love of reading.
- Reflect wider school events and themes though the library through displays, features and book / resource recommendations.
- Stay updated on trends in librarianship and education to continuously improve library services.
- Mentor and supervise library staff and volunteers, providing professional development opportunities.
- Set expectations of student behaviour in the library and ensure these are upheld.
Requirements
- Strong understanding of information literacy.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organisational skills.
- Experience in supervising or mentoring junior staff or volunteers is desirable.
- Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate library programmes and initiatives.
- Ability to assess library resources and services for continuous improvement.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying up to date with library trends.
- Proficiency in library management software and digital resource platforms.
- Ability to interact positively with students, teachers, and the school community.
- Strong organisational abilities to manage multiple tasks, including cataloging and inventory.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and library practices.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Relevant experience, preferably in a secondary school setting.
