Leadership Can Be Hit or Miss

It's a pretty typical experience for a mid-sized tech firm. There are good points, but leadership has some growing to do. Especially if you're working remotely.

Pros

My immediate team lead was solid and super supportive. They really helped me out as a Software Engineer on complex digital transformation projects. Our remote work setup also has decent tools.

Cons

Upper leadership often seems pretty disconnected from what we do daily. It's tough to get clear direction sometimes. They don't always get the challenges with remote teams.

Advice to Management

Try to connect more with individual contributors. Really understand the remote work experience better. Listen to your team leads; they know what's actually happening on the ground.

Work flexibility is a mixed bag here
Pros: My specific team had a pretty solid remote work policy for a while. We could mostly work from home, which was a huge plus for my work-life balance. It's nice that the tech industry overall supports this, and some managers really get it.
Cons: The biggest issue is the inconsistency. Not all projects or teams had the same flexibility. Some expected you in the Atlanta office for a hybrid model, making it tough to plan. It wasn't always clear what the expectation was for developers.
Advice to Management: Try to standardize the work flexibility policies across all teams and projects. It would help a lot if expectations for remote work or hybrid setups were consistent for all software engineers.

Remote Software Engineer: Leadership Needs Work
Pros: It's pretty good for a Software Engineer wanting to learn new tech stacks. My team in the remote setup was solid and supportive. You get decent exposure to digital transformation projects.
Cons: The leadership here changes direction too often. There's a real lack of consistent vision from the top, which can be tough for a growing IT consulting firm. Communication from management often feels scattered, leaving remote employees guessing.
Advice to Management: Focus on building a stable leadership team. Clear up communication channels, especially for remote staff. Give us a solid direction to work towards, particularly in our IT consulting projects.

Okay Place, But Job Security Is a Concern
Pros: I liked working with smart people on interesting software development projects. The hybrid work model in the Atlanta office was pretty flexible. Pay for Software Engineer roles was decent, not top tier but solid.
Cons: Job security here felt really unstable, especially in the current tech industry climate. There's a constant worry about layoffs and project changes. It's tough to plan your career when you're always wondering if your role is safe.
Advice to Management: Management needs to be more transparent about the company's financial health and future plans to ease employee anxiety. Clear communication could really help with morale and retention.
