Pros: I liked the hybrid work model; it gave me flexibility to work from home a couple days a week. As a Logistics Coordinator, my hours were usually 9-5, which is solid. The Calgary office environment was generally positive too.
Cons: There are definitely peak seasons in railway operations where you'll be putting in longer hours. Sometimes you're on call, which can mess with your personal plans. It's not always consistent, but that's just how the transportation industry goes.
Advice to Management: Try to better staff for peak demand in railway operations so teams aren't constantly stretched thin. More transparency on potential on-call schedules would also help.

Pros: The pay is actually pretty decent for the railroad industry, and the benefits package is solid. It's a very stable job, which is a big plus for a large corporate employer. Job security is a real strength here, especially working onsite in freight operations.
Cons: Career growth is tough to come by as a Track Maintenance Worker. There aren't many clear paths up the ladder, and promotions feel few and far between. It feels like you have to really fight for any advancement, and internal opportunities for learning new skills in rail transport are limited.
Advice to Management: You really need to create clearer advancement paths for frontline workers, especially for those of us in the Kansas City area. Invest more in internal training for different aspects of rail transport. It'd help with retention.

Cons: But for freight operations, the schedule is tough. You're often on call, which messes with your work-life balance. Management could really be better about staffing.
Advice to Management: Try to improve the schedules for onsite railroad staff. Better planning for freight operations could really help with burnout.
