Pay and Benefits are Pretty Average Here
Pros: The base salary for a Junior Software Engineer was decent, around $85k, which is okay for a first role in the software development industry. You get basic health insurance, and it kicks in pretty fast.
Cons: Raises aren't really happening, even after a year. For a tech startup in San Francisco, the total compensation package isn't super competitive. There's no 401k match, which feels like a miss.
Advice to Management: Seriously look at improving the overall compensation structure, especially with raises and adding a 401k match. It's tough to stay competitive in the Bay Area without it.

Work-Life Balance Is Decent, But Project Dependent
Pros: It's a large corporate, so there are resources available if you look for them. They offer a pretty solid hybrid model in the Toronto office, which is a big plus. For many weeks, a 40-hour work week is actually doable, which is nice.
Cons: When you're deep into EPCM projects, especially nearing deadlines, hours can get intense. I've seen weeks where Project Engineers push past 50-60 hours regularly. This really impacts your personal life and makes it tough to disconnect.
Advice to Management: Management should work harder to better manage workloads during peak project times, especially for engineering consulting staff. More support to avoid burnout for Project Engineers would be really beneficial. We need consistent work-life balance, not just during slow times.

Decent Balance for a Mid-Size Tech Company
Pros: The team is super collaborative, which I appreciate. We have a pretty solid hybrid work model which really helps with personal appointments. It's a decent environment for learning new things in software development.
Cons: Work-life balance here is tricky, especially during agile sprints. As a Software Engineer, you're expected to put in extra hours often. It gets tough to disconnect when projects are tight.
Advice to Management: Try to enforce stricter boundaries around working hours, especially when projects run long. More realistic sprint planning would help a lot.
