Great place for stability and learning in financial services
Pros: Sanlam is a solid financial services company, especially if you're looking for stability and learning opportunities. As a Financial Analyst, I've really appreciated the chance to dive into complex projects and work with a smart team here in Cape Town. The culture is generally supportive, and I feel like I'm constantly picking up new skills relevant to the industry. The benefits package is decent too, which is a plus. It's a large corporation with a good reputation.
Cons: Career progression can sometimes feel a bit slow, especially compared to smaller, faster-paced places. You really need to be proactive about seeking out new responsibilities to advance within the company. Also, some internal approval processes can be a bit bureaucratic, which occasionally delays project timelines. It's not a deal-breaker, but it's something to get used to in this kind of company.
Advice to Management: Continue to streamline internal processes to improve efficiency and project turnaround times. Also, explore more structured pathways for career advancement to better recognize and reward proactive employees who are keen to grow.

Decent Work-Life in Sanlam's Cape Town Office
Pros: They've got a solid hybrid work model now, which really helps. It's nice to have some flexibility for us in financial planning roles. The benefits package is decent for a large corporate.
Cons: Sometimes the client demands can be intense, especially quarter-end. You can end up working longer hours as a Financial Advisor than you'd like, impacting personal time. Growth opportunities feel a bit slow unless you push hard.
Advice to Management: Try to give teams more support during peak times to prevent burnout. Also, clearer paths for career growth would be good for staff.

Hybrid Work is Okay, But Could Improve
Pros: I do appreciate the hybrid work model Sanlam offers. As a Claims Processor, having a couple of remote work days helps a lot with personal appointments and avoiding the Cape Town commute. It's a decent perk for a large corporate environment in the financial services industry.
Cons: The flexibility isn't consistent across all teams or types of insurance claims. Sometimes it feels like you're still expected in the Cape Town office more than truly necessary. There's not much room for fully remote work, even for roles that seem suitable.
Advice to Management: Really look at which roles can be more flexible. Don't make people come into the Cape Town office just because. Trust your teams more with remote work days.
