Work-life Balance is Okay for Project Engineers
Pros: You do get some flexibility, especially if you finish your tasks early. The team in the Sydney office is generally supportive, which helps when you need to occasionally duck out for an appointment. For Project Engineer roles, the day-to-day isn't always chaotic.
Cons: However, when major infrastructure projects hit crunch time, expect long hours. Work-life balance can definitely suffer during these periods, and WFH isn't really an option for onsite roles. It's a common issue in the construction industry, but it still makes it tough.
Advice to Management: Try to manage project timelines better to avoid extreme crunch periods. Support your Project Engineers with better staffing during peak loads.

Okay Pay, Benefits Could Use a Boost
Pros: As a Project Engineer, the base salary for a grad role in civil construction was pretty solid to start. You get standard superannuation contributions and it's a stable job in a big corporate environment.
Cons: Raises are really slow, especially for field-based roles; it's tough to get a significant bump year-over-year. The benefits package isn't great, no real extra perks or attractive bonuses for the Sydney office unless you're very senior. It feels pretty barebones.
Advice to Management: Seriously look into updating the benefits package and creating a clearer path for salary increases, especially for engineers on site. It'd really help with retention.

Project Engineer role can be a grind in civil construction
Pros: You learn a lot as a Project Engineer on big infrastructure projects. Some team leads are really supportive, which helps when things get hectic. The pay is decent for a large corporate, and the benefits package is solid.
Cons: Work-life balance is definitely a struggle, especially when you're on a tight deadline in the Perth office. Long hours are expected, sometimes 10-12 a day. It's tough to plan much outside of work; you often feel like you're always 'on' for civil construction projects.
Advice to Management: Try to better manage project timelines and staffing levels so Project Engineers aren't constantly working overtime. More focus on actual work-life balance, not just talking about it, would help retain good talent.
