Introduced in July 2018, Setel is a mobile platform that aims to delight customers by innovating for better, inclusive mobility. Setel serves customers across Malaysia by powering one app as the constant companion to ease motorists’ journey across fuelling, parking, EV charging, motor insurance, road tax, auto assistance, general purchases and more across an ecosystem of PETRONAS petrol stations, retail partners, and online merchants.
Mobility is defined as the ability to move, be it physically or circumstantially. At Setel, we envision the Future of Mobility as the simplification of moving from one place to another through technological advancement.
Our Milestones - Enrich the convenience of purchasing at PETRONAS stations by seamlessly integrating both payments & the Mesra loyalty programme. - Enable one-tap fuelling from the petrol pump, cashless payments at PETRONAS Kedai Mesra, and store-to-vehicle shopping with the Deliver2Me feature to improve customer purchasing experience. - Pioneered the industry’s first cardless fleet fuelling solution for PETRONAS SmartPay. - Introduce mobility features such as parking payment, road tax renewal, vehicle takaful and insurance renewal, and auto assistance - all powered by Setel’s e-Wallet. More partners and features will be added to grow the mobility ecosystem. - Gradually expanding the presence of Setel payment availability to physical and online stores nationwide. - Extend the mobile platform to PETRONAS Shop, an eCommerce site that offers authentic PETRONAS products such as merchandise, lubricants, vouchers and more. - Incorporate the ‘One-click checkout’ feature that allows customers to complete transactions faster as shipping and payment details are obtained directly from their Setel account. - Pilot used cooking oil recycling feature to contribute towards securing feedstock for green fuel.

Pros: The team is generally supportive, and I've learned a ton about the digital payment platform industry as a Product Manager. They do offer hybrid work options, which is a big plus for flexibility in the Kuala Lumpur office.
Cons: Work-life balance can be tough. There are definitely periods of long hours, especially when we're pushing for big launches or in typical startup culture crunch times. It's not always easy to switch off completely.
Advice to Management: Try to ensure more consistent project planning and resource allocation. This would help prevent burnouts and improve the overall work-life balance for product roles and other teams.

Pros: As a Software Engineer, I generally found the work manageable during normal periods. The hybrid work model helped a lot with personal errands and avoiding the Kuala Lumpur traffic. You're not always chained to your desk.
Cons: Sometimes project deadlines in the fintech industry get really intense, leading to late nights or weekend work. That flexibility from hybrid work gets kinda lost when you're facing a big release. There's definitely a 'get it done' mentality.
Advice to Management: Try to set more realistic project timelines to avoid constant crunch periods, especially for core engineering roles. It would help with overall employee morale.

Pros: Some team leads are really supportive, especially in the Kuala Lumpur office. They're good at guiding new software engineers on complex fintech projects. It's nice to have that direct mentorship in a mid-sized company.
Cons: Upper management feels a bit disconnected sometimes. There's not enough clear direction for career progression, especially for senior engineering roles. It can make you feel stuck in a digital platform environment.
Advice to Management: Invest more in developing clearer career paths for individual contributors, especially for senior software engineers. Regular 1:1s with upper management would also help bridge the communication gap across the hybrid model.
