Good Company with Solid Projects and Flexibility
Pros: The teams here are genuinely supportive; you always feel like you can ask for help, which is great for learning and career development. The projects in infrastructure are significant, offering a lot of hands-on experience and a stable environment. I also appreciate the work flexibility; the hybrid arrangement allows for a good balance between office collaboration and personal commitments, which is a major plus in this industry. It's nice to have that trust and autonomy.
Cons: Sometimes the approval processes can feel a bit slow, which is pretty typical for a large enterprise like this. It can occasionally delay project milestones, but it's manageable. Also, while there are learning opportunities, career growth can sometimes feel a bit slower paced compared to smaller, faster-moving companies. You often need to be proactive in seeking out your next step.
Advice to Management: Keep fostering the flexible work environment and look for ways to streamline some of the internal approval workflows to empower teams more. Investing in clearer career progression paths would also be beneficial for employee retention.

Great Flexibility and Supportive Teams at Downer
Pros: Working at Downer as a Project Coordinator in infrastructure has been a positive experience. My colleagues are supportive, and I've learned a lot. The company offers great work flexibility, which helps with work-life balance, and there's good job security.
Cons: Sometimes the internal approval processes can be a bit slow. Career progression isn't always super quick, requiring proactive effort to find opportunities. Expect occasional busy periods due to project demands.
Advice to Management: Focus on streamlining some of the internal approval processes to improve efficiency. Also, consider more structured career development paths for employees.

Work-life Balance is Okay for Project Engineers
Pros: You do get some flexibility, especially if you finish your tasks early. The team in the Sydney office is generally supportive, which helps when you need to occasionally duck out for an appointment. For Project Engineer roles, the day-to-day isn't always chaotic.
Cons: However, when major infrastructure projects hit crunch time, expect long hours. Work-life balance can definitely suffer during these periods, and WFH isn't really an option for onsite roles. It's a common issue in the construction industry, but it still makes it tough.
Advice to Management: Try to manage project timelines better to avoid extreme crunch periods. Support your Project Engineers with better staffing during peak loads.
