Company Reviews

Amazon is guided by four principles: customer obsession rather than competitor focus, passion for invention, commitment to operational excellence, and long-term thinking. We are driven by the excitement of building technologies, inventing products, and providing services that change lives. We embrace new ways of doing things, make decisions quickly, and are not afraid to fail. We have the scope and capabilities of a large company, and the spirit and heart of a small one.

Together, Amazonians research and develop new technologies from Amazon Web Services to Alexa on behalf of our customers: shoppers, sellers, content creators, and developers around the world.

Our mission is to be Earth's most customer-centric company. Our actions, goals, projects, programs, and inventions begin and end with the customer top of mind.

You'll also hear us say that at Amazon, it's always "Day 1." What do we mean? That our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon's very first day - to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and focus on delighting our customers.

Solid for Big Tech, but Flexibility Varies
Pros: The WFH policy during COVID was great. For SDE roles, there's decent autonomy to manage your own calendar, especially if your manager is good. I could get my software engineering tasks done with some flexibility.
Cons: Post-COVID, they're pushing hard for hybrid, which can feel rigid. It's tough if you're not in the Seattle office. Sometimes finding a quiet space for deep work is a challenge.
Advice to Management: Give teams more control over their hybrid schedules. Trust employees to get the work done without strict office mandates. A more flexible remote policy would help retention.

Career Growth is Solid for SDEs in Big Tech
Pros: As a Software Development Engineer, you get exposed to a lot in e-commerce and cloud computing. There are tons of projects and teams, so you can definitely find internal transfers if you want to try something new, which is good for your resume.
Cons: Getting promoted isn't always straightforward; it feels very process-driven. It's easy to get pigeonholed on a project, and you really have to push hard for visibility if you want to move up.
Advice to Management: Make career progression paths more transparent and reduce the internal competition, especially for mid-level Software Development Engineer roles.

Solid Pay & Benefits, But Expect the Workload
Pros: The pay package for tech roles in the Seattle office is really good. My base salary was solid, and the RSUs made a big difference after the vesting period. Health benefits are comprehensive, and the 401k match is decent.
Cons: The vesting schedule for RSUs feels really backloaded, so it takes a while to see the full value. Work-life balance can be a struggle, which makes it tough to fully enjoy those benefits. There's always pressure to do more.
Advice to Management: Try to re-evaluate the RSU vesting schedule to make it more attractive upfront. Also, encourage teams to prioritize work-life balance for their engineers; burnout is real.
