Decent but Inconsistent Flexibility at Mace
Pros: It's good that Mace actually offers a hybrid model for many roles, which helps a lot. I usually get two WFH days a week as a Project Coordinator. This flexibility really makes a difference for personal appointments and avoiding the London commute.
Cons: The 'hybrid' part can be tough if your project requires more onsite presence. Sometimes you don't get those WFH days if there's a critical meeting or a deadline. It's not truly flexible for everyone in the construction industry, especially if you're stuck on a demanding project.
Advice to Management: Try to ensure the hybrid model is consistently applied across all projects and teams. Managers need more support to genuinely offer flexibility, especially for roles in the construction industry that traditionally are more rigid. A bit more trust in employees to manage their time would go a long way.

Decent for Project Engineers, but project-based job security.
Pros: For a Project Engineer, you get exposure to really large-scale construction projects across London. The experience is valuable, and there's always a new challenge. It's a good place to build a strong resume in the consultancy space.
Cons: Job security isn't always great, especially between big projects. If your project wraps up, you sometimes feel a bit vulnerable until the next one starts. There's not always a clear path to stay if a project gets delayed or cancelled.
Advice to Management: Try to create more stability for project-based roles like Project Engineers. Having a clearer internal mobility program or a 'bench' plan would really help with job security fears during project transitions.

Flexibility is tough on complex construction projects
Pros: There's some decent hybrid work options if your project allows it, mostly for back-office tasks. You can sometimes arrange an earlier start to leave a bit early, which helps. It's good for gaining experience on big construction projects.
Cons: Real work flexibility is often limited, especially when you're managing active construction projects. Being onsite in the London office or at project sites is a must, so remote from home isn't really an option most days. It's just the nature of our construction industry work.
Advice to Management: Try to offer more understanding around project demands and explore how technology can support flexibility. Even a bit more trust with hybrid work for non-site roles would help morale.

Solid Start, Stalled Growth at Mace
Pros: Starting as a Junior Project Manager, I got real hands-on experience in the construction industry pretty quickly. The projects are massive, which looks great on a CV, and the London office has a lot of connections. You'll learn a ton if you actively seek it out.
Cons: Career growth here is definitely an issue for mid-level roles. It feels like you hit a ceiling fast, and there's not much structured internal progression. You often have to leave Mace to move up in the project management field or get a significant pay bump.
Advice to Management: Mace leadership needs to invest more in clear career development paths and internal promotion opportunities for experienced staff. Create more mentorship programs and define how employees can move up, especially for project management roles.

Mace: Decent for Project Engineers, but watch hours
Pros: Working as a Project Engineer at Mace has its good sides. The team in the London office is really supportive. You get to work on some big infrastructure projects, which is cool for career development in construction.
Cons: The work-life balance can be tough, especially with project deadlines. I often found myself working more than 45-50 hours a week. It's not always easy to switch off when you're managing complex onsite tasks.
Advice to Management: Try to enforce reasonable working hours more consistently, especially for Project Engineer roles. A better hybrid model or more flexibility for administrative tasks would really help reduce burnout.

Pretty Secure Job if You're in Construction
Pros: There's always work in the UK construction market, so project flow is steady. For construction project management, job security feels pretty solid compared to smaller firms. They usually try to redeploy people if a project ends.
Cons: Growth can feel a bit slow sometimes; it's a huge corporate structure. Moving up as a Project Coordinator takes time and a lot of internal networking. The pay could be better for the amount of work you put in.
Advice to Management: Focus on clearer career paths for junior and mid-level staff. Improve communication around internal opportunities.

Leadership at Mace: It's a mixed bag
Pros: You'll find some really solid project managers here for construction projects. They generally support their teams well and know how to get things done. There's good potential for career growth if you connect with the right mentors.
Cons: The higher-level, strategic leadership can be pretty unclear sometimes. Communication about big company shifts often doesn't reach us on the ground effectively. It feels like senior management is sometimes out of touch with day-to-day operational challenges for project management roles.
Advice to Management: Please work on clearer, more consistent communication from the top leadership. Ensure strategic decisions are well-communicated to teams on actual construction sites. Bridge that gap between corporate strategy and what we face daily.

Decent Company, Leadership Needs More Grounding
Pros: I've been with Mace for a few years, and the hybrid work arrangement in the London office is genuinely good for a Project Manager. We get to work on some massive infrastructure projects, which is fantastic experience for anyone in construction management. The teams below senior leadership are usually great to work with.
Cons: The senior leadership team can feel pretty out of touch with what's happening day-to-day. It's tough when decisions take ages, and there isn't always clear direction or follow-through on initiatives impacting project delivery. This definitely impacts morale across the global corporate structure.
Advice to Management: Senior management needs to engage more with teams on the ground. Listen to the Project Managers and front-line staff about real project challenges. Clearer communication and follow-through on company initiatives would go a long way in boosting morale and overall productivity for our construction management roles.

Project Manager's Take on Mace Work-Life Balance
Pros: Honestly, they do try with the work flexibility; I get to use a hybrid model, which is a big plus. For us in the construction industry, that's not always a given. The London office has a good vibe among colleagues, which makes tough days better.
Cons: Work-life balance can definitely suffer during crunch times; 50-60 hour weeks aren't uncommon, especially in project delivery roles. It's just part of the large construction firm life, but it still makes it hard to switch off.
Advice to Management: Focus on truly empowering teams to manage their project delivery timelines better, reducing the constant crunch for Project Manager roles. Support work-life balance more actively.

Job Security is Decent, Project Dependent
Pros: As a Project Coordinator in the London office, I generally felt pretty secure. Mace is a large corporate firm with many ongoing infrastructure projects in the UK market, so there's usually work. They're a big name in construction management, which helps with overall stability.
Cons: Sometimes, job security feels directly tied to individual projects. If a big one finishes, you might feel a bit vulnerable until the next project starts. It's kind of the nature of being with a large consulting firm.
Advice to Management: Try to make transitions between projects smoother for employees. More internal mobility support would be great to boost job security perception.
