Okay for a startup, but hours vary
Pros: You get decent work flexibility here, which is nice. As a software engineer, I often managed my own schedule. The San Francisco office has good snacks and a comfy vibe too.
Cons: It's a startup so don't expect a 9-to-5, 40-hour week. Sprint deadlines for tech development can get super intense. It's tough to disconnect sometimes.
Advice to Management: Try to smooth out those sprint peaks a bit. Better planning would help reduce crunch time for engineering teams.

Good for learning, but path isn't clear
Pros: As a Software Engineer, you get hands-on with a lot of new tech. It's a solid place for gaining diverse project experience if you're proactive. This mid-sized tech company allows you to really dive in.
Cons: Career growth for engineering roles isn't super clear. There's no formal roadmap for promotions or salary bumps. You often have to seek out opportunities yourself in the San Francisco office.
Advice to Management: Establish clearer career ladders and formal mentorship programs. It would help retain talent in the San Francisco office.

Pay is Okay, Benefits Need Work
Pros: As a Software Engineer in the Austin, TX office, the base salary was pretty standard for a tech startup. They did offer a decent 401k match which is always a plus.
Cons: However, the health insurance costs felt really high, taking a chunk out of my paycheck. There's not much room for raises or bonus potential, even with good performance reviews.
Advice to Management: Consider reviewing the health plan options to reduce employee costs. Also, establish clear paths for salary increases beyond just a tiny annual bump.

Hybrid work is fine, but could be more flexible
Pros: We get a few WFH days each week, which is solid. It's helpful for deep work as a Software Engineer. The team generally makes the best of the hybrid model.
Cons: The mandatory 3 days in the San Francisco office feels rigid. There isn't much wiggle room to adjust the schedule. Leadership pushes for more onsite time, which is tough for work-life balance.
Advice to Management: Listen to employees about what true flexibility means. Trust your teams more to manage their own time and location. The current hybrid model isn't bad for a mid-sized tech company, but it could definitely be improved.

Solid place, but future's a bit hazy
Pros: They've kept the teams fairly stable for engineering roles, which is good. Project cycles are generally well-planned, so you don't feel like your work will just disappear. It's a pretty stable environment overall.
Cons: Honestly, with the recent tech industry layoffs, there's a low-key anxiety for remote workers. The company is pretty quiet about its financial health, which doesn't help with job security concerns for many of us, especially working remote from California.
Advice to Management: Be more transparent about company performance and future plans, especially regarding headcount. It would really ease some of the job security worries, especially for those in critical software development roles.

Leadership at Kake is a mixed bag, honestly.
Pros: I've seen some good technical leaders in my team; they really know their stuff. The benefits are pretty decent for a mid-sized tech company. We do get some flexibility with our hybrid work model, which is nice.
Cons: Upper leadership often feels out of touch with the engineering teams in the San Francisco office. Decisions can change weekly, making it tough for software engineers to stay focused. There's not enough clear direction from the top.
Advice to Management: Try to be more consistent with strategies and communicate changes better. Listen more to the individual contributors on the ground.

Decent Pay, Benefits Have Room to Grow
Pros: The base salary for a Software Engineer here is pretty competitive, especially for a mid-sized tech company in Austin. My health insurance benefits were good, which is a big plus. They also offer some useful wellness programs.
Cons: The 401k match isn't anything to write home about, it's pretty standard. PTO accrual can feel slow, especially when you're looking for a good work-life balance in a hybrid work model. Don't expect big annual bonuses here either.
Advice to Management: Improve the 401k match and rethink the PTO structure. Competitive compensation is more than just base salary for tech professionals today.

Culture has bright spots, but needs work.
Pros: Some teams have really solid people. You can learn a lot from your peers as a Software Engineer. The hybrid work model in the San Francisco office is pretty flexible, which is a big plus.
Cons: The company culture can feel a bit cliquey sometimes. It's tough to get your ideas heard if you're not in the "in crowd." Communication from leadership could be a lot better.
Advice to Management: Focus on creating a more inclusive environment. Make sure all voices are heard, not just a select few. Improve transparent communication across all teams.
