Great place for science and a supportive culture
Pros: Genentech fosters a truly collaborative and supportive culture. As a Senior Research Associate, I've found colleagues and leadership genuinely value scientific research and teamwork in the biotechnology industry. There are excellent learning opportunities for career development and a strong sense of job security.
Cons: The large company size can sometimes lead to slower approval processes, which occasionally impacts project timelines. While minor, promotions can also feel a bit drawn out at times.
Advice to Management: Streamline some of the internal approval processes to allow projects to move faster and explore ways to accelerate career progression for high-performing individuals.

Genentech's Okay, But Work-Life Varies Greatly
Pros: I've enjoyed the solid compensation and benefits package here, which really helps with Bay Area costs. As a Research Associate, the scientific resources for drug discovery are top-notch. The hybrid model offers some flexibility when I'm not doing critical lab work.
Cons: Work-life balance can be tough here in the biotech industry. It's not uncommon for projects to demand long hours, especially before big deadlines. The constant onsite lab work means less work-from-home flexibility compared to non-lab roles, which can be draining.
Advice to Management: Try to better manage project loads to prevent burnout, especially for those in critical lab roles. More focus on consistent work-life balance across all teams would be great.

Hybrid work has its limits in biotech
Pros: For some office-based roles, there's decent work-from-home flexibility, which is good. The South San Francisco campus is well-maintained with good amenities. Management often tries to be understanding when personal things come up.
Cons: As a Research Associate in Early Clinical Development, true hybrid work is tough. Most of my time is required onsite for lab work, which limits flexibility significantly. It's not a truly flexible biotech environment for all roles, especially those hands-on with drug discovery.
Advice to Management: Recognize that not all roles can truly be hybrid. Find ways to support onsite biotech employees better with schedules or resources to improve their work-life balance.
