Junior Electrical Engineer

Decent Work-Life Balance for Entry-Level Engineering
Pros: My role as a Junior Electrical Engineer generally means predictable 40-hour weeks. It's mostly onsite work in the Newport News, VA office, which is good if you like a clear separation. You usually leave your work at work, which is a big plus for a defense contractor.
Cons: Sometimes, big project deadlines, especially on crucial government contracts in the shipbuilding industry, can mean mandatory overtime. Flexibility isn't really a thing for my role, so no WFH options, ever. It feels a bit old-school in that regard.
Advice to Management: Try to manage project timelines better to reduce last-minute overtime demands on junior staff. Consider offering some form of hybrid work for roles that don't require constant physical presence.

Okay Work-Life, Depends on Project Demands
Pros: When project phases are calmer, you can usually stick to 40-hour weeks as an Electrical Engineer. There's good PTO, and managers generally don't bother you much after hours, which is nice for a defense contractor.
Cons: During crunch times for shipbuilding projects or government contracts, expect long hours. Sometimes I felt like I was working 50-60 hours a week for a month straight, and the pressure for deadlines can be intense. The mostly onsite work means less flexibility.
Advice to Management: Try to better manage project timelines to avoid extreme crunch periods that burn out the engineering teams. Explore more flexible work options where possible, especially for less hands-on roles.

Marine Electrical Engineer

Tough to get much flexibility at HII
Pros: The job security is solid, especially with ongoing naval projects. You'll learn a ton about shipbuilding and defense contractor work if you're new to the industry.
Cons: Work flexibility is tough to come by as a Marine Electrical Engineer. Most days are strictly onsite work, even for tasks that could be done remotely. It feels pretty old-school in that sense.
Advice to Management: Consider offering more hybrid or remote options for technical roles where feasible. It would really help with retention and attracting new talent, especially for the younger workforce.
