Stable Gig in Building Materials, But Watch Out
Pros: As a Process Engineer, I felt pretty secure at Holcim. It's a huge company in the building materials industry, so there's constant demand for products. The base pay and benefits package were also quite decent, which adds to the feeling of stability.
Cons: I've seen some pretty significant restructuring initiatives occur, especially in our St. Louis, MO operations. This can make you wonder about your long-term role, even if the overall job security for the company is solid. Promotions can also feel slow.
Advice to Management: Management should be more transparent during internal restructuring to ease employee anxieties. Clear communication helps retain good people.

Decent Pay, Benefits Need Work for Onsite Roles
Pros: As an Operations Supervisor, the base salary was pretty competitive for the St. Louis, MO area. They offer a solid 401k match after a year, which is great for the construction materials industry. It's stable pay.
Cons: Health insurance premiums feel high, especially for families. Dental coverage isn't impressive, and annual raises aren't always consistent across all onsite plant roles. Can be tough on the wallet.
Advice to Management: Look into improving the family health plan options and try to make annual raises more predictable across all plant roles. It helps with retention.

Leadership needs to connect more with the ground
Pros: The benefits package is solid, and job security feels good in the building materials sector. I also met some really dedicated folks in the Chicago, IL office. It's a pretty stable corporate environment overall.
Cons: Leadership often feels out of touch with what's happening on the ground for industrial roles. Decisions can come down quickly without much explanation, which is tough for daily operations. Career growth feels pretty stagnant without management support.
Advice to Management: Try to get a better understanding of the day-to-day challenges in the cement industry. Listen to your frontline managers and show more support for their teams.
