Mechanical Engineer

Decent for junior engineering roles, but plan your growth.
Pros: I got to work on a variety of interesting automotive projects, which was great for building a diverse portfolio as a Mechanical Engineer. You learn a lot quickly, and the team in the Detroit office was generally supportive. It's a big global engineering group, so there's always something new to tackle.
Cons: Career growth felt a bit vague at times; it wasn't always clear how to move up the ladder or what steps to take for promotion beyond junior engineering roles. It felt like you really had to advocate hard for yourself, and the timelines for advancements could be slow within this corporate environment.
Advice to Management: I'd suggest making career paths and promotion criteria much clearer, especially for individual contributors in engineering roles. More regular check-ins about career trajectory would help employees feel more valued and less like they're guessing.

Good Experience, But Job Security Is Tough
Pros: As an Engineering Consultant, I got to work on a variety of cool projects, mainly in the automotive industry. It's a solid way to build experience quickly, especially on those onsite client assignments.
Cons: The biggest issue is job security. When an onsite project wraps up, there's often a bit of a limbo period. You're constantly wondering if the next contract will come through or if you'll be benched, which isn't great for peace of mind.
Advice to Management: Work on improving the internal process for transitioning consultants between client projects. Clearer communication and a more proactive approach would help a lot with retention and employee morale.

Entry-level learning is good, then it slows.
Pros: I got a lot of hands-on experience as a Junior Mechanical Engineer right away. The work in the automotive industry is really diverse and you learn tons. It's a solid place for your first role.
Cons: Career growth is slow, seriously. There's no clear path for moving into senior engineer positions. You often feel stuck doing the same kind of project work for years.
Advice to Management: Management needs to create clear career ladders for engineering roles. Invest in training and mentorship for employees who want to advance. Don't just rely on external hires for senior positions.

Decent projects, but slow career path
Pros: You get to work on a lot of different engineering projects, which is great exposure. I learned a ton about automotive engineering principles here. It's a solid place for gaining experience early on.
Cons: Career growth really felt stagnant as a Mechanical Engineer. There wasn't a clear path up, and you rarely saw internal promotions. Moving to a different role, even in the Detroit office, was tough.
Advice to Management: Management should focus on creating clearer career paths for engineers. It's tough to see where you're going when you can't get promoted or move around departments.

Project-based work, okay for engineers
Pros: There's often a steady pipeline for Project Engineer roles, especially in automotive engineering if you're good at client relations. Being a global engineering firm, they usually try to find you another project if one ends, which helps with overall stability.
Cons: Job security can feel a bit shaky between contracts, especially for hybrid workers not always in the office. If your project wraps up, you might be 'on the bench' for a while, and communication about the next assignment isn't always great.
Advice to Management: Improve communication around project transitions for all engineering consultants, especially for those in hybrid arrangements, to reduce anxiety about being unassigned.

Okay Culture for Project-Based Engineering
Pros: The project teams I worked with were generally solid. You meet lots of different people in the automotive industry, which is good for networking. They sometimes have team lunch events that help foster some connection.
Cons: The company culture feels pretty cold and impersonal. It's super project-focused, so it's hard to feel like part of a larger community. Management seems a bit disconnected from our daily lives as engineering consultants.
Advice to Management: Try to build a stronger overall company community, not just a bunch of isolated project teams. Invest more in regular team building and show engineering consultants that they're valued beyond their current assignment.

Decent Work-Life Balance, Depends on Project
Pros: Working as a Mechanical Design Engineer here, I appreciate the hybrid model. It helps with personal appointments. For many automotive projects, we actually stick to standard 40-hour weeks. That's a solid win for work-life balance.
Cons: Some engineering consulting projects have crazy tight deadlines. This means mandatory overtime often, especially when client demands ramp up. It's tough to truly disconnect when you know a big delivery is looming.
Advice to Management: Try to standardize workload expectations across different projects within the global engineering firm. More support during peak client demand would help prevent burnout among engineering staff. Communication about project scope changes also helps.

Job Security Can Be a Real Concern Here
Pros: I liked working on a variety of R&D projects. As a Project Coordinator, I got exposure to different automotive engineering clients. It's a solid place to gain experience if you're newer to the engineering consulting world.
Cons: The biggest issue is job security; it's pretty low. There's always this underlying worry about what happens when your project wraps up. This makes it tough to feel stable, even with a decent workload.
Advice to Management: Management needs to address the job security issue for project-based roles. More clear communication and pathways for what happens between client engagements would help a lot with retention and employee morale.

Okay for Stability, Not Great for Flexibility
Pros: The job itself for an engineering role is pretty stable. You learn a lot about product development in the automotive industry. Sometimes, you can WFH one day a week if your project manager is cool.
Cons: Work flexibility isn't their strong suit at all. It's tough to get approved for a consistent hybrid model, even for experienced Design Engineers. Most days you're onsite, which makes personal appointments tricky.
Advice to Management: Reconsider the work flexibility policies, especially for long-term employees and engineering roles. A more consistent hybrid model would really boost morale and help with retention.

Job security is a bit of a mixed bag
Pros: Project variety is a big plus for an automotive engineer. You get to work on different types of vehicles and systems for big automotive clients. The technical challenges at the Troy, Michigan office keep things interesting.
Cons: But honestly, job security can feel pretty iffy here. Project contracts often have fixed terms. There's always a worry for us engineers about when the next assignment will come up, especially in this global engineering firm.
Advice to Management: Improve communication about future projects for employees. Having more transparency about potential contract renewals or new assignments would help reduce anxiety for the technical teams.
