Merchandising Coordinator

Solid entry-level, but growth is slow
Pros: I really enjoyed the team environment in the San Diego corporate office. The company culture felt pretty supportive, especially for new hires in pet supplies retail. You can gain solid foundational experience as a Merchandising Coordinator.
Cons: It's tough to see a clear path for career growth past the entry-level roles. There aren't many opportunities for internal promotion in merchandising, and skill development feels neglected. You just kind of hit a wall.
Advice to Management: Invest more in clear career progression plans and offer dedicated training for employees who want to move up. Create more internal pathways for advancement.

Store Associate

Petco's okay, but flexibility is tough.
Pros: As a Store Associate, I genuinely enjoyed the daily interaction with animals and helping customers with pet supplies. The team spirit in the San Diego store was usually pretty good, and I learned a lot about pet care.
Cons: However, work flexibility for retail roles is a major struggle. My schedule was constantly shifting, making personal planning tough. It's frustrating when a corporate company can't offer consistent shifts or approve time off easily for onsite staff.
Advice to Management: Try to offer more predictable schedules for your in-store teams. Better communication about shift changes and making time off requests smoother would help a lot with employee morale and retention.

Okay for a Start, Growth is Tough
Pros: I liked working with the pets and helping customers find their pet supplies. The team in my San Diego store was usually pretty good too. It's a decent entry-level retail role if you just need a job.
Cons: Career growth is really slow for a Retail Associate. There's not much upward mobility in the store operations path unless someone leaves. Don't expect much formal training for higher roles either, which makes it hard to move up.
Advice to Management: Management needs to create clearer career paths and offer more internal training programs for team members who want to move up beyond basic retail associate duties. Invest in your people to reduce turnover.
