Great learning, tough for career growth
Pros: Working as a Research Assistant at UBC gave me solid lab experience. It's an excellent place to build foundational skills in academic research, especially in the Vancouver, BC campus setting. The work-life balance was decent for my role, with set hours.
Cons: Career growth here is pretty limited for staff positions. There aren't many clear promotion paths, and you often feel stuck at a certain level. Opportunities for advancement within the higher education system are definitely slow to appear.
Advice to Management: UBC management needs to create clearer career progression frameworks for non-faculty staff. Investing in more internal training and promotion opportunities would really help with retention and morale for academic research roles.

Leadership can be inconsistent across UBC
Pros: My direct supervisor and faculty leadership in the department were pretty supportive. There's good mentorship for Research Assistant roles, and they really champion your work. The Vancouver campus itself is a great place to be for higher education.
Cons: Senior management at this large university feels disconnected from the ground level. Communication from the top down for academic roles isn't always clear, and it's tough to see how their decisions impact day-to-day research. It can be frustrating.
Advice to Management: Try to bridge the gap between senior administration and the actual researchers and staff. More transparent decision-making and better communication about strategic directions would help everyone feel more valued in this higher education setting.
