Solid Engineering Firm with Great Development Opportunities
Pros: HDR offers civil engineers great learning and development on diverse infrastructure projects. The collaborative culture with supportive colleagues is a highlight. Compensation is competitive for the engineering industry, and benefits (health, retirement) are strong, providing excellent stability for a professional services firm.
Cons: Promotions can feel slow due to bureaucracy, and company-wide communication from leadership sometimes lacks transparency. Approval processes for changes can also be lengthy.
Advice to Management: Focus on streamlining the promotion process and improving transparency in company-wide strategic communications. Empower teams more to reduce lengthy approval cycles.

Decent place for engineering, but watch your hours
Pros: I've been a Civil Engineer here for a bit, and the hybrid work option in the Denver office is pretty good. It lets me balance some personal stuff during the week. Project variety in infrastructure is solid.
Cons: Sometimes, managing project deadlines means a lot of overtime, especially as a lead engineer. The expectations for billable hours can make work-life balance tough. You really gotta set boundaries or you'll burn out.
Advice to Management: Try to support project managers more so they don't always push for excessive overtime to hit targets. Emphasize sustainable workload management for all engineering roles.

Solid Place, Leadership Can Be Hit or Miss
Pros: It's a really stable engineering firm, which is nice. As a Project Manager, you get to work on some genuinely interesting infrastructure projects. The Denver office has some great folks, and there's good job security here.
Cons: What about leadership? It really depends on your immediate supervisor. Upper management in this large corporate environment sometimes feels a bit out of touch, and big decisions can take a while. Communication could be better, even with hybrid work options.
Advice to Management: Focus on improving transparent communication from the executive level down to project teams. Empower middle management more to make decisions without excessive bureaucracy. A bit more focus on leadership development beyond technical skills would help.
