Company Reviews

In 2003, Tyro set out to change the way payments are made. Today, we're still on a mission to make payments the easiest part of doing business, believing that nothing should stand in the way of business success for Australian merchants. We power more than 76,000 merchants across the country with in-store, online and on-the-go payments solutions designed specifically for businesses in hospitality, retail, services and health.

A tech company at heart, innovation has always been a part of our DNA at Tyro. We were the first tech company to obtain a full banking licence in Australia, allowing us to develop an integrated payments, banking and lending offering built specifically to make it easier for merchants to pay and get paid. Through Tyro, Australian merchants can accept payments anywhere, anytime, receive their takings on the same day and access fast, flexible funding through our award-winning repay-as-you-trade business loan as they scale and grow.

Marking our twenty-first birthday in 2024, this year we celebrate more than two decades of integrated connectivity with Australia’s innovative digital payments ecosystem. We work with more than 450 active partners in our broad and growing network to create seamless payment experiences and value-added products that customers love.

Work-life balance is okay, mostly.
Pros: For a Software Engineer, the work-life balance is surprisingly decent most weeks. I appreciate the hybrid work setup; it really helps avoid that daily Sydney commute and lets me focus.
Cons: When we hit crunch time, especially with new features for payments processing, it gets tough. You can expect some long hours, and the pressure is real to meet deadlines.
Advice to Management: Try to give teams more buffer for complex projects. The constant pressure during development sprints in fintech can lead to burnout.

Decent Flexibility in a Fast-Paced Fintech Role
Pros: You get some solid hybrid work options for engineering roles. Coming into the Sydney office 2-3 days a week feels pretty balanced. It's good to see your team in person, but also have dedicated WFH days.
Cons: While some teams have good flexibility, it can vary a lot by manager. Full remote isn't really an option, even for senior Software Engineers. It'd be great if they standardized things across the whole company.
Advice to Management: Try to make flexibility policies more consistent across different departments. It helps with morale when everyone knows what to expect.

Work-life balance is okay, but it varies
Pros: The hybrid work model is a huge win, especially for a Software Engineer in the Sydney office. WFH days really help balance personal commitments.
Cons: However, project deadlines in the payment processing industry can be brutal. There's often pressure to work extra hours, which can hit your work-life balance hard.
Advice to Management: Try to forecast project loads better. This would really help prevent last-minute crunch times for development teams.
