Leadership needs more empathy, less micromanaging
Pros: Job security in the enterprise software space is solid. I met some really great people in the Ottawa office. The pay for Software Developer roles is pretty competitive for mid-level folks.
Cons: Upper leadership often feels disconnected from daily project work. There's a big focus on acquiring new companies, but internal growth isn't prioritized. It can be frustrating when they don't grasp the complexities of maintaining some of our older IT solutions.
Advice to Management: Truly listen to your engineering teams, don't just make them jump through hoops. Invest in training and development for current employees. Empower managers to lead their teams without constant micromanagement from the top.

Solid Job Security if You Perform
Pros: Job security is really strong here, especially if you're working on legacy vertical market software. They don't lay people off easily. You can mostly do your thing as a Software Engineer, remote from Dallas, without too much micromanagement. It's a big, corporate company.
Cons: Career growth can feel slow. There aren't many opportunities for quick advancement or working on cutting-edge tech. Sometimes it feels like you're just maintaining old systems. Innovation isn't a huge focus, which can get boring.
Advice to Management: Focus more on employee development and introducing some newer technologies. It would help retain talent.

Hands-off leadership, good for independent work.
Pros: As a software developer, I've had a lot of autonomy in my daily tasks. Remote work is well-supported, which is great for flexibility. The decentralized model has its perks for independent contributors.
Cons: Leadership can feel pretty disconnected from the day-to-day. Career growth paths aren't always clear, and feedback from senior management is scarce. There's not much proactive coaching or mentorship for us in the vertical market software teams.
Advice to Management: Focus more on developing clearer career progression frameworks and provide more consistent, actionable feedback and mentorship. It would really help boost engagement and retention, especially for remote software developers.

Solid Flexibility for Remote IT Roles
Pros: I've enjoyed the work arrangement here, especially being able to work remote from my home office. It's a big plus for work-life balance. For IT solution implementation, they give you decent autonomy.
Cons: Sometimes it feels like flexibility depends a lot on your direct manager, not a company-wide policy. There isn't always enough support for non-standard schedules for certain vertical market software projects.
Advice to Management: Standardize remote work policies more. Ensure all managers support flexible schedules for all roles, especially for implementation consultant teams.

Solid Stability, Career Growth Needs a Push
Pros: You get a lot of job security here, which is a big plus as a Software Developer, especially in the vertical market software space. The work-life balance is generally good, and they are quite flexible with remote work. I appreciate the steady pace, no crazy crunch times.
Cons: Career growth opportunities can feel a bit limited for individual contributors. It's not always clear how to move up or get onto more challenging projects without really pushing for it. There isn't a lot of emphasis on professional development programs.
Advice to Management: Consider implementing more structured career development plans for technical staff. Creating clearer paths for advancement for Software Developer roles would really help retain talent and boost morale. Also, encourage more cross-team project collaboration.

Decent benefits, but base pay needs work
Pros: The benefits package for an Implementation Consultant is pretty solid; you get good health coverage and a decent amount of PTO. It's not top-tier, but it's competitive for the software industry, especially for a large corporate environment.
Cons: Base pay is just okay, definitely not leading the market. Raises are super slow, and annual bonuses aren't really a thing. It feels like they pinch pennies when it comes to salary increases, which can be frustrating remote from Toronto.
Advice to Management: Look into making base salaries more competitive with the market, especially for experienced roles. Introduce a clearer path for salary increases and consider performance-based bonuses to motivate employees. Invest more in compensation for employees in the software industry.

Okay Pay, Benefits Could Be Better
Pros: The base salary for a Software Developer is pretty solid. I've found it to be competitive for a remote position in the public sector software industry. There's good job security, which is a definite plus.
Cons: Annual raises are usually pretty small, so don't expect much growth there. The benefits package, like health insurance and retirement plans, is just okay – it's not bad, but it's not amazing either. For a corporate company, I expected a bit more.
Advice to Management: Consider improving the overall benefits package and be more transparent about salary growth opportunities. Employees want to see their pay keep up with the market.

Career growth can be slow for analysts
Pros: You get solid job security working in the enterprise software space. It's a very stable corporate environment. You can learn a lot if you're willing to dive deep into different software solutions.
Cons: There isn't much upward movement for Business Analyst roles. You often get stuck maintaining older, legacy systems. A clear career path isn't really outlined, even for those of us in the Ottawa office.
Advice to Management: Please create clearer career progression paths for non-management roles. Invest more in modernizing legacy systems and offer more training for new technologies to keep employees engaged and allow for growth.

Harris Computer: Solid Job Security, Slower Growth
Pros: You're not getting laid off here. As a Software Engineer, the work supporting existing public sector software is really steady. It's a big, corporate parent company, so job security is high, especially with all their acquisitions.
Cons: Pay isn't competitive, especially if you're looking for big tech salaries. Career progression for technical roles can feel stagnant. Sometimes it feels like they don't invest much in modernizing older products.
Advice to Management: Invest more in modernizing acquired products and offer more competitive compensation packages. It would help retain talent.

Leadership is a Mixed Bag, Good WFH
Pros: Work-life balance is generally good for most software developer roles. You can usually stick to 40-hour weeks. The hybrid work model is a major plus, especially for us working from the Ottawa office.
Cons: Leadership quality is super inconsistent. Some leaders are truly great, but others really struggle with providing clear direction, especially after an acquisition. Career growth feels slow if your direct manager isn't actively pushing for you, and there isn't a clear path forward.
Advice to Management: Please invest in standardized leadership training across all your acquired companies. It's important to ensure consistent management quality. Also, create clearer career progression frameworks for technical roles like Software Developer to help retain talent.
