Decent work-life balance for an exam board
Pros: It's pretty good being able to work remote from home. As an Assessment Developer, I've got a lot of flexibility with my hours, which helps a lot with personal stuff. The core hours are fair, making it easier to manage family life.
Cons: Workload can really spike when you're developing qualifications for new specs. It's tough to stick to a 40-hour week sometimes in the UK education sector, especially during peak times. You end up putting in extra time, which can mess with your work-life balance.
Advice to Management: Address workload spikes better and make sure teams aren't consistently crunching. It would help if resource planning accounted more for the intensity of developing qualifications.

Pay is okay, benefits solid for public sector
Pros: The pension scheme is actually quite good, definitely a plus for a public sector organisation. You get decent annual leave too, which is nice. For an Assessment Developer working in the Manchester office, these benefits are pretty solid.
Cons: Base salaries aren't really competitive with private sector roles, which can be tough. It feels like you're often underpaid compared to the workload, especially within the education sector. Don't expect huge bonuses here.
Advice to Management: Revisit the salary bands to better reflect market rates, especially for specialized roles like Assessment Developer. It would help attract and retain top talent in the education sector.

Decent flexibility, but some teams struggle.
Pros: They do offer hybrid work which is a big plus. I could typically work from home a couple of days a week, which helps with the commute to the Manchester office. For many in curriculum development, this was a lifesaver.
Cons: Not all teams have the same flexibility. Some colleagues, especially in operational roles, had to be in the office more often. Scheduling meetings with remote and onsite folks could be a pain point.
Advice to Management: Standardize flexible working policies across all departments. Ensure managers are properly trained to support hybrid teams effectively. This would really help with overall morale.
