Okay Work-Life, Tough for Software Engineers

Keyloop offers decent remote flexibility, which helps with work-life balance for software engineers. However, project crunch times can make things challenging.

Pros

The remote work policy is a definite plus for flexibility. As a Software Engineer, I found the core daily tasks manageable. The benefits package is solid for a corporate environment.

Cons

Work-life balance gets tricky during major release cycles. There's pressure to put in extra hours when deadlines loom. Leadership often struggles to shield engineering teams from constant scope changes in automotive software projects.

Advice to Management

Try to improve project planning to avoid intense crunch periods, especially for core development teams. Empower managers to protect their teams from unrealistic expectations.

Leadership has its moments, some areas need work
Pros: The teams I've worked with are solid. There's good camaraderie among staff, especially in the London office. We're also working on interesting challenges in automotive retail software, which keeps things engaging.
Cons: Leadership can feel a bit disconnected from daily operations. It's tough when decisions shift without much explanation, impacting project timelines. Sometimes you wonder about the bigger picture and long-term vision from upper management.
Advice to Management: Try to be more transparent with your team. Better communication on strategy would help everyone, especially us Project Managers trying to align efforts. Connect more with the people on the ground.

Hybrid work is okay, but could be better
Pros: The hybrid model is a decent step for a mid-sized tech company in the automotive retail tech space. We get 2 WFH days a week, which helps with commute to the London office. It's good to have some flexibility for personal appointments too.
Cons: The mandated 3 days in the office feels a bit rigid for a software engineer role. Sometimes there's not a clear reason to be onsite, especially if your team is remote. It's tough to get full remote work, even for senior roles.
Advice to Management: Consider more flexibility beyond the 3-day office rule, especially for certain roles that don't need constant physical presence. Trust employees more to deliver from anywhere.

Pay is okay, but could be better.
Pros: They offer a decent pension plan, which is a solid plus. For a corporate environment in automotive software, the overall benefits package isn't terrible, especially the healthcare options. There's a feeling of stability.
Cons: The base salary for a Software Engineer here in the Marlow office feels a bit low compared to current market rates. Raises aren't huge, and sometimes it feels like pay doesn't fully match the workload, especially when working on complex dealer management systems. Compensation isn't very competitive.
Advice to Management: Regularly review compensation packages to ensure they are competitive with the broader tech and automotive software industries. Invest more in base salaries and performance-based bonuses to retain talent, especially for key technical roles.
