Operations Supervisor

Solid Job Security in Port Operations
Pros: The job security at this global corporate is really strong. Being in container shipping, there's always demand, so as an Operations Supervisor, I felt pretty safe. It's a large company, so they tend to weather economic shifts well.
Cons: While job security is good, internal promotions can be slow sometimes. There's also occasional restructuring in specific port operations which can create some uncertainty. Doesn't happen often, but it's something to note.
Advice to Management: Try to communicate internal changes and restructures more transparently and proactively. Invest more in career development paths for existing employees.

Hybrid Model is Okay for Logistics Roles
Pros: It's nice that they offer a hybrid work model for office-based roles like mine. Being able to work from home a couple of days a week really helps with commuting to the Elizabeth, NJ office. For container shipping, that's pretty good.
Cons: You still have to be onsite most of the week. Real work flexibility is tough for port operations, so I get it, but it limits personal appointments. Some teams get more freedom than others, which isn't fair.
Advice to Management: Try to standardize hybrid policies across different departments. More trust in employees could lead to better work-life balance and higher morale, even in demanding port operations.

Terminal Operations Coordinator

Solid Company, Decent Job Security in Shipping
Pros: As a Terminal Operations Coordinator, I felt pretty secure in my role. The global shipping industry is always busy, so there's consistent work, even when things get tough. APM Terminals is a big corporate player, so they don't just lay people off for small dips.
Cons: Sometimes the job security comes with a lack of upward mobility. It can be hard to move up for roles in the Port of Los Angeles without specific advanced degrees. The company's size means bureaucracy can slow things down, which is frustrating.
Advice to Management: Try to create clearer paths for internal career advancement, especially for experienced ops staff. Streamlining some of the corporate processes would also help boost efficiency.
