Work-life Balance Can Be Tough Sometimes
Pros: The hybrid work model is a huge plus, really helps with commuting to the Nottingham office. There's decent flexibility when you need to handle personal stuff, especially as a Software Engineer. The teams are generally supportive, which helps a lot.
Cons: Project deadlines can get really intense, leading to long hours in software development. It's easy to feel stretched thin, and sometimes the pressure from leadership impacts your personal time. I've seen some burn out due to the pace.
Advice to Management: Management needs to really look at project scoping and realistic deadlines. Better resource allocation would prevent team members from getting burnt out. Encourage taking proper breaks and disconnecting.

Career Growth is a Bit Slow Here
Pros: It's a stable environment, especially good for entry-level software developers learning the ropes of public sector software. The WFH setup is solid. You get decent work flexibility which is a big plus.
Cons: Career growth is definitely a challenge. Moving up to a Senior Software Engineer role takes a long time, and there aren't many clear pathways. The projects can feel a bit stagnant, often just maintaining existing applications rather than developing new solutions in the tech industry.
Advice to Management: Focus on creating clearer, faster career progression paths for technical roles. Invest in new tech training to keep employees engaged and skills current.

Decent Flexibility, But Still A Big Corporate
Pros: They've got good hybrid work options here, usually 2-3 days in the Nottingham office. It's pretty easy to adjust your start and end times too if you need to, which is great for parents or appointments. For many developer roles, remote work from home is also an option a few days a week.
Cons: Sometimes the 'flexibility' feels more like an unspoken expectation to be available beyond core hours, especially when working on big enterprise software projects. It can be tough getting full remote approval, even for long-term employees, if your manager isn't keen.
Advice to Management: Standardize the flexible work policies across departments. Make it clearer what's possible for remote work for all roles, especially for senior engineers.
