Job Stability is Okay, But Growth is Slow
Pros: You're pretty safe here; job security is decent because of all the ongoing infrastructure projects. For operational roles like mine, there's always work, and it's a big, established company so they don't do crazy layoffs. It's a reliable place for steady onsite work.
Cons: Career advancement can feel really slow, especially as a Project Coordinator. You can get stuck in a role for a long time. There's not much formal career pathing or professional development support, which can be tough. It doesn't always feel like a modern corporate environment.
Advice to Management: Invest more in formal career development programs for employees, particularly for roles like Project Coordinator. It would help retain talent and keep people motivated, beyond just the promise of steady work.

Culture's getting there, but slowly.
Pros: The team I worked with for civil construction projects was super supportive. Everyone pitches in when things get tough on a job site. It's nice to have that camaraderie in the Halifax office.
Cons: There's a lot of old guard thinking here. New ideas, especially for efficiency in this corporate environment, don't always get a fair shot. The company culture can feel a bit resistant to change, making it tough for younger employees to influence things.
Advice to Management: Management needs to be more open to new perspectives and actively solicit feedback from all levels. Investing in internal development beyond just technical skills would help.

Heavy Equipment Operator

Decent Pay, Benefits Need an Upgrade
Pros: The hourly pay for Heavy Equipment Operator roles is pretty decent, especially for onsite municipal construction projects in Nova Scotia. You get steady work and weekly pay, which is always good. Health insurance is okay for basic needs.
Cons: The health insurance benefits are just okay, not amazing, especially the dental coverage. There's not much of a bonus structure for these heavy civil roles, and the retirement plan could use a serious update. It feels a bit behind other big construction companies in the area.
Advice to Management: Look into enhancing the retirement matching and seriously upgrade dental benefits. It would help a lot with retention for skilled construction trades like Heavy Equipment Operators.
