Decent Flexibility, But You'll Work Hard
Pros: As a Game Developer, I really appreciate the hybrid work model. We can mostly WFH, only needing to be in the Austin office 2-3 days a week. It's a solid perk for the gaming industry.
Cons: While the WFH is good, the actual hours can be pretty long. Sometimes, during a project crunch, that flexibility kind of vanishes. There's an expectation you're always 'on,' even remotely.
Advice to Management: Try to protect WFH and hybrid schedules during crunch periods. Employee burnout is real, even with remote options.

Okay for benefits, not for salary.
Pros: The health insurance benefits are actually pretty solid; they cover a lot, which is a big plus in the video game industry. We also get a decent amount of PTO, which is good for work-life balance in a mid-sized studio.
Cons: The base salary for Game Designer roles isn't super competitive; it's hard to justify staying long-term. Raises are also usually pretty small, so don't expect to get rich here.
Advice to Management: Seriously re-evaluate the compensation structure for individual contributors. Being more competitive with salaries and offering clearer paths for significant raises would help retention a lot, especially for experienced game developers.

Culture's fine, but it has its moments
Pros: The team here is generally passionate about game development, which is great. I liked the vibe in the San Francisco office, especially during crunch times when we all pulled together. There's a lot of creative energy around new game concepts.
Cons: Sometimes it felt like management didn't really 'get' the struggles of individual game dev roles. The social aspect can be a bit cliquey, and it's tough to break into some groups. Work-life balance suffers when major project milestones hit.
Advice to Management: Try to foster more inclusive social events that aren't just for established friend groups. Understand the daily grind for game developers better.
