Pretty good for remote humanitarian work
Pros: The remote work flexibility is genuinely great. As an Information Management Officer, I could set my own hours most days. It's perfect for balancing personal life with a demanding international NGO role. You don't get that everywhere.
Cons: Sometimes, collaboration across time zones was tough. It meant late calls for some team members. There's also less spontaneous interaction than an in-office setting. Communication could be clearer for fully remote teams.
Advice to Management: Invest in better tools and clearer guidelines for asynchronous remote communication. This would help bridge time zone gaps and make collaboration smoother for global teams.

Good WFH, but watch out for project spikes
Pros: I really appreciated the work-from-home flexibility. Being remote from Nairobi meant I didn't have a commute, which is great for work-life balance. For humanitarian information roles, that flexibility is a big deal. The standard 40-hour week usually held.
Cons: There were definite crunch times during major global crises. It's tough when a disaster hits and you're working really long hours on critical updates. Sometimes, the workload for this international organization felt overwhelming for specific projects.
Advice to Management: Try to staff up a bit more during peak disaster response times. It would help prevent burnout for information officers.

Good mission, but fixed contracts are common
Pros: The mission in the humanitarian sector is truly impactful, and you feel like your work makes a difference daily. As an Information Management Officer, I had a lot of autonomy and the remote work setup was fantastic for work-life balance.
Cons: Job security can be a real concern here, especially for Information Management Officer roles. Contracts are almost always fixed-term, usually one or two years, so you're constantly thinking about your next step. It's not like a big corporate job with indefinite employment.
Advice to Management: Consider offering more long-term or permanent contracts, especially for critical roles. It would help retain talent and build more institutional knowledge within the humanitarian information space.
