Flexibility is Tough for RNs Here
Pros: You definitely learn a lot here, especially in patient care. The benefits package is decent for a large hospital. Colleagues are generally supportive, which helps with tough shifts in this Boston, MA setting.
Cons: Work flexibility here is pretty low. As a Registered Nurse, you're looking at standard 12-hour shifts and not much wiggle room. Mandated overtime happens too often, making work-life balance a real challenge for onsite staff. It's hard to plan anything outside of work.
Advice to Management: Try to find ways to offer more flexible scheduling or reduce mandated overtime. It would really help retain good healthcare professionals and improve morale, especially for those of us on the front lines in patient care.

Okay Flexibility for Healthcare Staff
Pros: They do offer some flexible shift options if you plan ahead. As an RN, I've been able to trade shifts with colleagues which helps sometimes. It's a big medical center, so there are always shifts to pick up.
Cons: Work flexibility for nurses isn't always great, especially for last-minute needs. It's tough to adjust your schedule for appointments without using PTO. Most roles in the Boston, MA area are strictly onsite, no hybrid options.
Advice to Management: Try to offer more predictable, flexible scheduling for all healthcare industry roles, especially for those in direct patient care. Managers should be empowered to approve more flexible work arrangements.

Work-life balance is decent for nurses, but it's earned
Pros: For a large hospital system, they offer pretty solid benefits. I liked the consistent shift schedule as a Registered Nurse, which helped with planning. PTO accrual isn't bad after your first year.
Cons: The onsite demands in the Boston, MA location mean long days are common, especially in critical care. Don't expect much work flexibility or WFH options. The healthcare industry is just demanding, and it shows here.
Advice to Management: Try to be more understanding of staffing needs and burnout, especially for direct patient care roles. More support for work-life integration could go a long way.

Tough Hours for RNs, but Team is Good
Pros: I've had some really great colleagues in the Boston, MA location. They make the demanding patient care environment a lot more bearable. There's a decent tuition reimbursement program too, which is a nice perk for career development.
Cons: Work-life balance is a real struggle, especially for us working rotating shifts. As a Registered Nurse, I often work mandatory overtime, which makes planning anything outside of work tough. It's hard to feel like you have a life sometimes.
Advice to Management: Management really needs to address the staffing levels. More staff would drastically improve work-life balance for all healthcare professionals, especially for frontline roles like Registered Nurses. Reduce mandatory overtime whenever possible.
