Company Summary

Company Reviews

J D Wetherspoon is a leading pub operator in the UK and Ireland. Back in 1979, founder chairman Tim Martin opened the very first Wetherspoon – in Muswell Hill, north London. Today, Tim and the company run over 850 pubs and hotels, spread right across the UK and, more recently, Ireland. During its history of over 40 years, Wetherspoon has repeatedly led the way with ground-breaking initiatives, picked up hundreds of awards (covering all aspects of pub life) and grown from a handful of staff to over 40,000 employees. The company seeks to develop its staff through effective and award-winning training and development, through a positive working environment and, of course, by means of a competitive pay packet. Every year, thousands of staff complete one or more of our award-winning training courses, not only preparing them to work safely and to the best of their ability, but also inspiring them to pursue positive career development. The company prides itself in offering, at all levels, excellent training and support.

Okay for a first job, pay's just meh
Pros: Shift flexibility is good, which really helps if you're a student or have other things going on. You pick up skills fast in that kind of busy pub environment. Plus, the staff discount on food and drinks is a decent perk for us Team Members.
Cons: The pay is definitely on the lower side for the pub chain industry. Hourly rates are not competitive, and the benefits package is pretty basic. You can't expect big raises or bonuses, even if you work really hard. It's tough to live on these wages in Manchester.
Advice to Management: Management really needs to look at increasing hourly wages and improving the benefits. It's tough to keep good bar staff when other places pay more. Investing in your people will pay off.

Work-life balance is tough but manageable here
Pros: You can usually swap shifts with colleagues, which is good for personal plans in this fast-paced hospitality industry. The team's pretty solid, and we try to help each other out, which makes the onsite job feel a bit better.
Cons: The hours for Team Leader roles can be brutal, especially weekend and late-night shift work. It's hard to get a consistent schedule, and short-staffing often means working extra without much notice, seriously impacting my work-life balance.
Advice to Management: Invest more in staffing across all pubs, especially for management, so existing employees aren't constantly picking up extra shifts. More predictable scheduling would really help everyone.

Okay for entry-level, but not amazing pay
Pros: You do get a good staff discount on food and drinks, which helps when you're working long shifts. It's a stable job in the pub environment, and training for new bar staff is pretty solid.
Cons: The hourly wage for bar staff in Manchester is really low, especially with the cost of living. There aren't many extra benefits beyond the discount, so don't count on a great package for a corporate hospitality role.
Advice to Management: Please consider increasing the hourly wage for frontline staff; it's getting harder to afford to live, especially in cities like Manchester. Better pay would really boost morale across the large pub chain.
