Manufacturing Engineer

Solid company, slow career growth here
Pros: You learn a ton about actual automotive manufacturing processes, especially component production. It's a really stable job, which is nice if you're looking for job security with a large corporate company, a big tier 1 supplier. The benefits package is pretty solid too.
Cons: Career growth as a Manufacturing Engineer feels pretty capped. There aren't many clear promotion paths, or at least they don't happen often in the Detroit, MI plant. You usually need to move departments or locations to actually advance, which isn't ideal for those of us doing onsite work.
Advice to Management: Invest more in clear internal career development and promotion paths, especially for engineers. It'd really help with retention.

Quality Control Inspector

Pay's fine, benefits are just okay.
Pros: The hourly pay for us Quality Control Inspectors is actually pretty solid, especially for the Urbana, IL plant. You do get regular pay bumps which is good. It's stable work in the automotive parts supplier industry.
Cons: Healthcare premiums are pretty steep for a large corporate company, which eats into your take-home. The 401k match isn't competitive, it feels a bit low for manufacturing roles. Don't expect a lot of extra perks.
Advice to Management: Re-evaluate the benefits package, especially healthcare costs and the 401k match, to be more competitive with other large manufacturing companies. Better benefits would really help retain talent.

Okay balance for Production Supervisor roles
Pros: As a Production Supervisor in automotive manufacturing, I generally had decent hours. Overtime was usually paid, which helped a lot. There's often a chance to take vacation when you need it, which is good.
Cons: Things can get crazy during production crunches, especially in our Detroit area plant. It's tough when you're short-staffed; you feel like you can't really leave. Sometimes shifts change last minute, which messes up personal plans a lot.
Advice to Management: Management should really work on consistent staffing levels across all shifts. It would help if shift changes weren't so last minute for Production Supervisor roles, giving people more notice.
