Field Service Technician

Okay Work-Life, Depends on Your Role
Pros: I've had some good stretches where my schedule as a Field Service Technician was pretty predictable. The company has decent PTO, which helps when you need a break. Being in the heavy equipment industry, there's always work, which is good for job security.
Cons: Other times, especially during peak season, I'm working way more than 40 hours a week. It's often required to be onsite for emergency repairs, which can mess up personal plans. The travel for remote sites also eats into your free time.
Advice to Management: Management should really look at more consistent scheduling for field teams. Maybe hire more staff to reduce the burden on existing Field Service Technicians, especially in high-demand regions like Peoria, IL.

Great Place for Stability and Solid Benefits in Heavy Equipment
Pros: Working as a Service Engineer at Komatsu, I appreciate the job security this company provides in the heavy equipment sector. The pay and benefits are really solid, especially the healthcare and retirement plans, which makes a big difference. I've learned a ton about construction and mining equipment, and my colleagues are always willing to help out. It's a team-oriented environment.
Cons: Sometimes the workload for a Service Engineer can get pretty demanding, especially during peak seasons or when critical machinery needs immediate attention. Work-life balance can be a challenge during those times. Also, getting approvals for certain projects or advancements can feel a bit slow due to the size of the company.
Advice to Management: I'd suggest looking into ways to streamline the internal approval processes and perhaps explore more flexible scheduling options during off-peak times to help with work-life balance for field service roles.

Leadership is a bit of a mixed bag here
Pros: My direct supervisors were usually pretty good. They really understood our technical challenges as Project Engineers and offered solid support. It's a big, corporate company so job security feels decent, especially in the construction industry. The benefits package is also quite solid.
Cons: It feels like upper management can be pretty out of touch sometimes. Decisions take way too long to come down, which slows our engineering projects in Peoria, IL. There's not always a super clear direction, making it tough to plan ahead for teams.
Advice to Management: Work on improving communication from senior leadership. Try to empower local teams and managers more to make quicker decisions. A clearer vision for the future would really help.
