Solid Pay for Cloud Software Engineering

Elastic offers solid compensation overall for a cloud software company, but the base salary might not always hit big tech levels. The benefits are decent, especially health, and remote flexibility is a huge plus.

Pros

The RSU package as a Software Engineer is pretty good, especially with refreshers. Health insurance is solid, definitely a major perk for remote workers. It's nice not to worry about healthcare costs.

Cons

Base salary can feel a bit low compared to other big tech companies in the data platform space. The bonus structure is variable and sometimes feels unpredictable. Don't expect top-tier dental or vision plans.

Advice to Management

Review the base salary bands to stay competitive with other major players in the distributed systems industry. Make bonus targets clearer for individual contributors.

Awesome Remote Culture, Solid Pay & Learning
Pros: Elastic's remote-first culture is a huge plus for work flexibility and work-life balance as a Software Engineer. Pay and benefits are very competitive within the software industry. My colleagues are smart and supportive, leading to excellent learning opportunities.
Cons: Rapid pace means priorities shift frequently. Staying fully aligned across many distributed teams and time zones occasionally needs extra communication effort.
Advice to Management: Keep refining internal communication strategies to ensure all distributed teams are consistently aligned, especially with the rapid product evolution.

Good Culture for Remote Software Engineers
Pros: The remote culture is really strong; they do a good job making you feel connected even from home. As a Software Engineer, I felt supported by my team and there's a good emphasis on collaboration within our engineering teams. They genuinely embrace the distributed model.
Cons: Sometimes it's hard to get a clear picture across different departments due to the sheer size. While the remote setup is great, building strong personal bonds with colleagues can be a challenge. The rapid growth can make things feel a bit chaotic sometimes.
Advice to Management: Try to improve cross-functional communication tools to cut down on information silos. More structured social events for remote folks could help build stronger connections.

Decent tech, slow career growth for engineers
Pros: You get to work with cutting-edge tech in the cloud computing space, especially around data search. There's plenty to learn if you're proactive. It's a great place for new grads or those wanting to dive deep technically without much pressure for a management track early on.
Cons: Career progression for Software Engineer roles can feel pretty slow. There aren't clear promotion paths, and you often need to actively seek out new responsibilities. This can be tough if you're looking for quick vertical movement within a mid-sized tech company.
Advice to Management: Leadership needs to define clearer career paths for individual contributors, especially for engineering roles. Make it transparent what's required for promotions.
