Test Engineer

Hybrid work is okay, but not for everyone.
Pros: For some automotive engineering roles, a hybrid work model exists, letting you balance onsite work with some remote work. It's nice not being in the Wolfsburg office five days a week, especially during less critical project phases.
Cons: The "flexibility" often depends heavily on your project and manager. As a Test Engineer, you'll often need to be onsite for vehicle testing and hardware. Full WFH is pretty rare, and you can't always choose your days easily.
Advice to Management: Try to standardize the hybrid policy more across different automotive product development projects. It's tough when some teams get flexibility and others don't, especially for Test Engineer positions where remote tasks are possible.

Project Engineer

Stable for some, but project-based insecurity.
Pros: It's pretty stable if you're on a long-term client project, especially for Project Engineer roles in the automotive industry. They generally try to keep good people around in the Troy, Michigan office.
Cons: Job security can feel a bit up in the air sometimes. If a client project ends, you might be 'on the bench' for a while. It's tough when you're not on a direct client contract.
Advice to Management: Management should focus on more internal opportunities or clearer pathways for those between client projects. It would help reduce the uncertainty for employees.

Work-Life Balance Can Be Hit or Miss
Pros: When you're on a less demanding project, as an Automotive Engineer, the work-life balance can be decent. There are some managers in the Wolfsburg office who genuinely try to protect their team's hours, which is good. You might get lucky and stick to 40-hour weeks.
Cons: The biggest downside is inconsistency; some projects in product development demand long, intensive hours with tight deadlines. It's tough when you're expected to be onsite five days a week and there's little work flexibility. This makes it hard to maintain a personal life, especially for junior engineering roles.
Advice to Management: Standardize project workload expectations across the automotive industry divisions. Try to offer more true work flexibility instead of a strict onsite policy, even for our core R&D teams.
