Decent Work-Life Balance for Defence Engineering
Pros: The work-life balance here is pretty solid. As a Software Engineer, I mostly stick to 40-hour weeks, which is tough to find in some parts of the defence industry. They also offer hybrid work, which is a big plus for daily flexibility.
Cons: Sometimes, deadlines for government contracts can get intense, leading to some unexpected long days. Career growth for engineering roles can also feel a bit slow; there aren't always clear advancement paths.
Advice to Management: Try to give teams more foresight on critical project timelines to avoid last-minute crunches. Also, consider clearer career development plans for technical staff in the various engineering departments.

Decent Work-Life for an Engineer, It Depends
Pros: For a big company in the aerospace industry, the work-life balance is pretty okay. We've got a decent hybrid model, so I can usually WFH a couple of days a week, which helps a lot. As a Software Engineer, my direct team usually respects 40-hour weeks.
Cons: Some teams, especially on critical defense projects, definitely have crunch periods and can get intense. You can feel a bit stuck in the corporate structure, and flexibility isn't consistent across all departments in the Rome office. It can be tough to push back on late requests sometimes.
Advice to Management: Try to standardize workload expectations across all departments. More transparency on project timelines would help teams plan better and avoid last-minute rushes.

Steady Ship, But Don't Expect Rapid Changes
Pros: If you want stability, this is it. The defense sector provides solid job security, especially with all the government contracts we get. As a Software Engineer, I never worried about layoffs; it's a very secure place to work in the Edinburgh office.
Cons: Things move super slow here. Career growth is tough for technical roles because processes are so bureaucratic. It feels like you're often stuck on legacy systems and innovation isn't a huge priority.
Advice to Management: Try to speed up the internal processes and create clearer career paths for engineers. Encourage more agile development practices. It would really help with employee morale.
